water during winter

This has worked really well for me so far, under $20 and done. Uses the same waterer year round. Just make sure it's always submerged although if I remember correctly it has a safety to shut itself off.
Buy one of these, several sizes to choose from:

And install like so :

That’s great to see it is fully submersible. The only stock aquarium heaters I’ve used were not fully submersible, so didn’t consider them.

You are in a cold area (CT) according to your location. So, does this work even during really cold weather -like when the pesky polar vortex shows up? Also, where is the water located: within a larger (warmer) barn area, or outside? I was surprised that the de-icer we bought was completely ineffective, despite being used in a 5-gallon bucket inside an elevated coop during cold, but not really cold weather.

I buy this and drill nipples into it. They don’t usually freeze but sometimes you have to work them a little to break the ice on the inside. It works wonderfully and the one I have has a cute little dome top. It looks like a fairy house lol :)
We use 2 gallon heated buckets.
It’s too deep for the birds to step in but our teenage birds sometimes stand on the edge to drink but it’s never been a problem.
The overnight lows have been in the low 20s.

If you are worried they have many different wattages available. So far no issues. Chickens have moved to new location this winter. In a barn with no heat. This past spring when I used this setup in my old coop and with different waterers (homemade PVC ones with little red cups) water was thawed but the red cups would freeze. That's the reason I switched to this bucket type waterer

So I can see it keeping the water thawed on the inside. It keeps it thawed in the red drinking area?

It has so far, down into the high teens low 20's. I believe it will do fine even lower because the water is connected from inside to out. Problem with the cups and some nipple systems is you have a break in the heat transfer. If I used nipples I would use metal ones as they would transfer heat best

Well shoot, I wish I would have seen this yesterday! I’m curious how it holds up below zero, which we get regularly, so please keep us posted! I did come up with what I think is a viable solution for my dog bowl (I also have 2 heated horizontal waterers):

Looks like you got a nice system down. Hell if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Why do you have different types of waterers? Looks like standard trough and nipples.
Probably overkill, but I’m nervous my flock isn’t getting enough to drink with just the horizontal waterers. And I feed wet mash, so I feel like they need a place to wash their beaks. Really though, I’m just a nervous chicken mom & don’t want them to be thirsty ;)
