water during winter

this morning it was 1 degree, probably got colder during the night and both water bowls stayed thawed.. i'm leaving the girls in the coop today.. just too cold outside..
X2 they are closed in, I even made them a dish of chopped up cocktail shrimp and rice. Nearly tried to kill me when I took the empty containers away. First time they have shrimp I guess they like it.

Last two winters I bought those pricey heated waterers but I now have so many chickens I almost need an extra. The girls did peck at where the wire goes in on one and it shorted out so I cut the cord and use it during the warm. I really like the suggestions above and will try some. My question is how to keep the shavings under the waterers dry/drained. Last winter I lost a little Wyandotte who got her feet frozen standing in wet shavings. Any suggestions.

That's a great treat!
Animal protein and the stuff that makes yolks orangierer.
I'd be hard put to give it to them tho, I love shrimp.

Wife was cleaning out the fridge. Makes 2 of us, prefer shrimp over most anything else. Go figure for the next 2 weeks eggs get tossed. Just gave them Wazine17 this morning.

shrimp n rice, good idea.. today they got toast, some banana bread and a tomato.. i'll give them a corn on the cob later..

I have the heated 2 gallon waterer from Farm Innovators with horizontal nipples. We hit -20C last night, colder with the windchill and it worked great. There wasn't any ice on the nipples so if I had to leave for a night I wouldn't be too worried. I love that I won't have to dump water this winter, I can just keep adding it as they drink it.
It took awhile for my girls to figure out the nipples. Every third morning I bring their regular water out just in case.

Nice!
Is waterer inside coop?
I think we hit -12F(-23C) before nipple lip froze.
Mines inside coop.

Nope, mine is outside in the run. I have the option of putting it inside but the sun is out today and it isn't very windy so the girls are out. I only lock them in during the day if they've all gone back inside before I leave for work. That doesn't happen often, and it hasn't happened yet this year.

Out in the run with no wind block?!
That's impressive.
