water/feeder in coop or run???

we paid $2 for a square bale in the fall. I used about 1 a month over the winter, less now, because they are outside most of the day (broilers have gone through 1.5 in 5 weeks though.)

In the summer I water outside, feed is inside, and bring water in over the winter, though it makes a mess, I want to have a table for the water this winter, which will hopefully help with the mess. I figure 1/8 of each container ends up on the floor/ground
what is "broilers"?

what is "broilers"?

Broilers are chickens raised for meat. We normally think of the Cornish Cross, also called Cornish X, as broilers, but there are a few others Like Freedom Rangers that also qualify. The older a chicken gets the tougher it's meat becomes. The "broilers" are hybrids that have been developed to gain enough weight early enough so they are still very tender. A Cornish Cross reaches butcher weight by 6 to 8 weeks, where a standard chicken may take 16 to 20 weeks and may still not be as big.

wow....i didnt know that. We dont plan on eating Simon, but that is good to know if we ever decide to raise for eating purposes. We didnt decide on a breed. our cornish decided on us. Like I said, we has alot of trouble keeping chickens until Simon and we were lucky that we were able tofind him a mate and an extra hen that did well. I never would thought raising chickens was going to be so hard. But our first year was a huge heart ache.

I fall into the both category. Some coops do have both water and food, others it's in the pen. Really depends on your set-up and ease of accessibility.
I suppose we are going to have to just try everything out until we find what ends up working LOL

There is a big difference in the regular Cornish breed and the Cornish Cross broilers. Regular Cornish are just chickens like other breeds. It's the hybrids that are used for broilers. You can look on Feathersite to see what a true Cornish looks like. They are broad-breasted birds but have a distinct look quite different than the hybrids.

Straw bales, and hay bales too for that matter, peal apart in sections called "flakes". Usually eight to ten flakes a bale. Makes it easy to spread.

Wondering about the wisdom of rainwater. If you have sparrows and starlings eating out of your eavestroughs you could get wild bird feces in your rainwater.

oh my goodness, I didnt even think of that...we was going to put in a gutter to help send water to the rain barrel, I wonder if there is a way to keep that from being a problem? Maybe I shoul,d take a trip to our extension office and ask what kind of birds we have that could be an issue. they are the ones that helped up to build our rain barrels to begin with. hopefully they will have some good information for me
