I have a hen who went broody. With the temperatures rising, should I put water and food right by the egg box? She is coming out and eating/drinking/dust bathing every day.

I'm worried that with it getting hotter, she might be at risk. I don't really want water in the coop but can if your recommendations suggest it!

Thanks!

When I have a broody, I bring them things like strawberry and watermelon and have little cups of water and food within reach. They typically get all bent out of shape when they see my hand coming but snatch up the fruit and gobble it down.

I think they know they don't need that much layer feed when they're brooding but the fruit seems to be a hit. They drink the water, too. Once my girls truly commit to the nest, they don't leave it for DAYS at a time and they get to looking pale and skinny. I think they fare a little better when I help them this way.

wow....Thank you both! I really appreciate the info since this will be the first time I'm letting a hen sit.

She's actually been broody for over a week now and I keep throwing her out of the box. The eggs should be coming in another day or two....makes the whole thing longer for her :(

Guess I'll just keep a close watch!

I've been through two 21- day broody sits. I've placed food and water within easy reach, but I've noticed neither broody took advantage of it. They ignored it.

Broodies have a tendency to go into a trance and not want to get off the nest for days at a time. This isn't good.

I get them off the nest once a day, whether they want to or not. I gently pull them off and scoot them outside to poop and eat something. They always go to the water first. They even take advantage of a quick dirt bath after they've eaten something. Then ten minutes later, they're back on the nest.

It's risky to their health and well-being to just leave them alone to sit for days on end. You can't assume they'll eat or drink enough, especially if it's very hot.
