  1. i have a seven day old chick.. yesterday chick walked around some. This morning it looked like chick was tired. It did get up and go to food. I'm not sure if it ate anything or just laid down . Maybe an hour later I saw chick opening And closing mouth. I dipped the very tip of the beak into water. Chick acted like she drank it but kept opening and closing mouth And a few minutes later had a bubble forming once in a while. The chick seems tired still and once in a while opens and closes beak. I haven't seen anymore bubbles for an hour and a half. I have been rubbing her back and where I think the crop is (rubbing her neck). Any suggestions?

If your chick hasn't connected with food very well... OR if it's digestion system isn't fully functioning... unfortunately the open mouth thing is an indicator of system failure in MY experience.

I would crush the feed a little extra (are you feeding chick crumble?), and drop in front of the chick... say in a higher pitch, quick voice "look babe, look"! Also run my finger through the feed... anything to pique interest.

Other things... does it have buddies? Is it warm enough? :fl

It has one buddy. This is an unexpected chick . My hen came out of brush with chicks. This one had still been in the egg along with 2 other chicks that had hatched. They were covered in flies. The Mom was gone with the other chicks. We brought them in.. lost one.. It hatched and seemed fine. We tried to get the 2 chicks to go to the Mom but they wouldn't. So we have them in.
It did have bubbles coming out of its mouth earlier and now is closing its eyes and just seem lethargic

[ I do have electrolytes which I can make that water up but I'm scared to put the tip of the beak into water

It needs to have it’s beak dipped into water with electrolytes for a second, then let it swallow. Do this several times to get it drinking. If you have Poultry NutriDrench or Poultry Cell tonics, use that to get a few drops into the beak, then get it drinking. A spoon up to the beak or a little scoop may be helpful. Gasping is what it sounds like, and that is a bad sign. Do you have it under a heat lamp or heating pad? It needs heat if the broody is not present. Check it for pasty batt, a poop blockage, and clean it off with soapy water. Then recheck for it daily. Sprinkle some chick crumbles around it’s feet on a paper towel and show it the food by putting the beak down into it.

We have been holding the chick.. making sure it is up right. I'm concerned giving it more water if it had bubbles earlier.
It had pasty butt the other day but it was washed off.

I agree with the gasping thing meaning they're fading.

I'd mix up the vitamin water and mix a bit with the chick feed to make a mush, then dip the chicks beak into that instead of the water as if it's gasping it'll just make it fade faster by trying to get more liquid down it. This has helped a few of mine.
Good luck!

Was your chicks sleeping? This one will not keep eyes open

Unfortunately yes. Very sleepy.
You can try vigorously rubbing them to get them alert and then dipping the beak into the vitamin mush. But sometimes when they're this far gone no matter how hard you try they just don't make it and it's heartbreaking.

It doesn't have the energy needed from calories to keep it's eyes open... I hatch a LOT and these things happen.

If your scared to dip the beak, drip a few drops below the nostrils and the chick should gobble when it rolls around into the mouth. Plain water won't do it at this point. The electrolyte water or nutri drench is NEEDED. Energy (to open eyes or any other movement including breathing) comes from calories. But it needs to be warm also.

Keep checking for the pasty butt... it can rebuild quickly and is deadly fast. :fl
