I've had my chicks on horizontal nipple waterers since week 3. They work great, and they go though 1/4 the amount of water. Not because they're drinking less, but because they aren't wasting so much.
That and I don't have to clean it out every 3.7 seconds.
A 1 gallon bucket with 3 nipples on it lasts my 6 (8 week old) chickens 2 or 3 days. I change and refill the water then at least just to make sure it's fresh. The could probably go a week before actually draining it.
