Waterer that does not spill out and wont get full of poop

On the quasi related subject of feeders I found a icecream bucket lid fit nearly perfectly on top of my like 12 gallon feeder(watever size is about the same as a 2.5 gallon waterer), keeps the poo out. and they dont seem to like to perch on it anymore either, maybe they dont like how it moves under them?

I just switched to using a galvanized wash tub with a float valve and water hose atached to it. I just dump this out every couple days and it automatically fills back up anytime it is low. tha galvanized doesn't rust and does not grow algae. I have stopped using the regular type waterers for now since this is easier, works better, and the ducks like it much better since they can dip their head in it also.

I think we have the same waterer....we hang ours...just low enough that they can get to it...no more perching and nice clean water! Just make sure it is level when hanging and no water should spill out.

This works very well for galvanized feeders and waterers. Set them on blocks and then take a cheapo tomato cage (the kind with three graduating rings and three prongs that are worthless for tomato plants) and slip one over each waterer and feeder. The prongs keep the hens from perching.

I use a 5 gallon bucket for the grown chickens. I cut out a hole that is 6" up from the bottom. The width of the hole is 12". I cut mine up to the bottom ring on the top of the bucket. They work good for me, easy to fill and clean.

This is what I do, too. I had problems with all those gravity waterers; they leaked, grew algae, hard to clean, etc. A pan is nice and simple - they don't sit or stand in it and I just wipe it out if it gets dirty. The bantams perch on the edge to drink, but its heavy enough that they can't tip it over.

ETA: I keep it up on cinder blocks to keep most of the dust out and it stays surprisingly clean! I have 34 chickens in that pen w/ one pan and I only have to fill it every other day or so.

We hang ours on a chain with an S-hook so it's adjustable, with the bottom of the waterer and their feeder just above the top of their backs. No perching and pooping in the water.

I use a hanging bell waterer that I bought from Cutler Supply (best price) and I put a tsp of bleach in the 5 gallon bottle I use for the water supply. Stays clean, they don't try to roost on it.
