How in the world can I keep the chicks from knocking over their waterer? There isnt enough room in the brooder for me to go get a 1 gallon one, as they are quickly outgrowing the brooder and we plan to build them a larger one this weekend but until then, I have to constantly go check them and upright the water. I went down at midnight last night filled it up, went back this morning at 6:20 and it was knocked over. I refilled it and you would of thought that they havent had water for weeks instead of a couple hours! I have appts this afternoon and cant do the water game all day, and I worry about the lil peepers!!

Why don't you just put a dish of water in there for a few days. The water will get yucky, but at least they won't spill it. You can replace it in the morning, and after work, and before bed......

Put some pebbles or stones in the basin with the water they will weight it down.

If your are anything like mine were they will climb on top of the waterer so it needs some weight.

Yep they have just started the king on the mtn routine in the last couple of days! lol I will go get some marbles out of my glass jar lamp lol lol

We have the old mason jar kind and wire the base to a brick. It makes refilling a little more clumsy but keeps the bedding out a little and stops the knock overs. I've seen people use dryer vent clamps too with success. You can also keep chanting to yourself that it's "just a few more weeks."

ok I went and stole marbles from my lamp and put them in the waterer, the chicks all ran from it like it was a snake and are slowly walking to it and peeking and then running away lol CHICKENS buahhaaaa

I took a cardboard box apart and "rolled" it into a cone shape. I taped this together w/packing tape and place it on top of the mason jar waterer. This will help with the king-of-the-mountain game:) They really need to have water accessible 24/ when they are young. Try a bigger mason jar, additional waterers, etc. They will get it messy - part of having chickens, especially young chicks:P

I bent a wire that fits fairly tightly around the plastic jar, then hung the wire from the top wit two wires. This does not keep it level if your base is not level, but it does keep them from turning it over.

Thank you all for the ideas, I have the marbles in for now, and I just found an ad on CL for a stock tank (trough) so I emailed about it in the hopes of getting it to use as the brooder! If so, I will have a heavy waterer in there right quick lol
