Waterfowl Feed Recall 7/2012

I wouldnt up and switch feed brands because of a recall on one line of Mazuri (not produced the same as purina). There will always be recalls in feeds for one reason or another. Dog and cat foods suffer recalls too. It is always good to watch how your birds react to a bag of feed, make sure you also look at and smell the feed so you know if one bag to another is off in one way or another.

I just bought FR last week and they all been eating it fine. But this sure is scary.
I checked the purina site to check and see if any of their other feeds are under recall and couldn't find anything. I've been working on a 50lb bag of FR for over a month now with no ill effects.
I really do wonder about the last bag I bought, and Mildred getting sick, she seems find now....but they sure didn't want to eat that last bag of feed. The latest bag they are gobbling down. But now I am wondering whether I should find another feed.
Did she have weird eggs for a while too? If something seems amiss, likely it is. Trust the birds.

Do you have a source for Scratch and Peck near you? Might be worth a try if you think you want to switch.

Good advice. If something doesn't seem right with the feed, take it back to the store.

That said, if you were already on the fence about switching feed before this happened, it could be the factor that makes you choose one over another.

I'm sick of seeing friends with catastrophically ill birds.

Purina owns Mazuri.. Which I found out not to long ago and I was very shocked.
I have stopped feeding any and all Nutrena or Purina feed and I have started using feed some a local feed mill. I have already noticed the difference in feed, it smells fresher and has about everything the other 2 products had, but cheaper.

The only thing I don't like about the Local feed mill feed is that its in Crumble form, I personally like the pellet form especially for the waterfowl.

We don't have local feed mills, and lucky for us our feed store only carries fresh bags, my newest bags are from June. It's nice not having our store stock pile tons of feed to resell.

It's always nice to have a relationship with your feed store so you know their practices. I love my feed store, but they ran out of my feed several times last year because they try to only stock fresh as well. They've gotten better with their ordering and haven't ran out of anything I've needed in some time. Good people.

And unlike a lot of feed stores out there, they know exactly what they have when it comes to chicks and ducklings. No mistakes when people go in for a certain breed.

Looks like there's a limited recall on Purina Mills Layena feed too!

This is one thing that I don't like about Mazuri. I would never feed my dogs Purina, but for dogs, there are a lot of better options out there. It's a little more difficult to find a waterfowl diet.

I am able to get a locally milled Duck & Goose diet, too, but not everyone is. I feed about half Mazuri, half local feed.

Nice. I briefly considered buying some Strategy this weekend, for a mare that I'm trying to put weight on. Glad I went with my gut and opted not to do grain until all else has failed!

It looks like my state wasn't affected, but it sure doesn't give me any confidence in Purina brands.
