Waterfowl Pics and Chat!

My barn babies. I'd take a pic of the others, but the white sebbies and and africans would blend in with the snow. LOL

They don't even look like the same birds! Great job!

NPIP allows you to ship eggs, and live chicks and birds. Hatchlings from NPIP parents (chicks/goslings/ducklings) can be shipped. It enables you to sell your eggs and offspring, and parents if you want. Its illegal to ship any of those without NPIP, so the advantages are basically freedom w/o breaking the law (a federal offense to ship accross state lines w/o NPIP I think - may have to ask Iain about that, I'm not sure on the laws on this)

Of course, now I have to test every December. I'm going to keep the birds in the barn that day for easy catching, then release one at a time. They have to draw a bit of blood, and test it one at a time. If everyone's ok, you get a paper that you have to send, and they give you your NPIP number. (at least thats how it worked for the sebbies this summer that 4H let us test when others were testing). I only tested them, so I need to test everyone I've got an interest in selling eggs from, or offspring from. Since I'm not going to add many geese to the flock (maybe a gray toulouse or two from hatching some eggs from Iain to replace lost one, and a few of the buffs too) everyone else leaves as eggs or babies. I've allready got a waiting list for my Java eggs 4 deep, so they are all waiting for NPIP. I did sell some eggs allready, since the birds were NPIP before I got them and I had the number, but nothing else can be sold until....

for getting ahold of them again for testing. Although Dec testing for you will be cold I bet.

NPIP clears your flocks as clean from various avian diseases. Not all states test for the same things. Most states require you to be 1- NPIP and 2- have a permit for shipping into their state. Virginia is the worst and will file charges if you dont follow their rules. You send a NPIP form with each egg order and live bird shipment sent. Your state gets a copy of them as well. Your state will often send your NPIP info to the states you shipped to and if you didnt get their permit for shipping into that particular state ahead of time they can come back on you.

NPIP flocks can not buy from people who are not NPIP or it nulls your status and forces you to be re-tested to be NPIP again. (like what I had to do this year to clear the new geese)

Why can't we buy from NPIP folks? That seems like it would be the safest and most reasonable people to buy from! That sounds silly. How do you find out which states have which rules, Celtic? I don't want to screw this up. Where do you get the extra forms to ship with? Some of my stuff just comes with the # on the egg box!
