We have 2 small coops. About 10 chickens each. We have used both the metal waterers at the feed store as well as the plastic. They are either rusting quickly or breaking. We have had to replace them about 2 times a year. I need some thoughts of waterers that might work that are easy to fill and clean. Thanks. Becky.

The best thing you can do for your own sanity is to switch your flock over to horizontal water nipples. I did, and boy-howdy I have never looked back!! Here's a pic/example of my setup:

No more daily cleanouts of the filty dirty waterers...YAY!!

When you get them (you can get them online just about anywhere, just Google 'horizontal water nipples') all you do is drill a hole using a 3/8" drill bit about 1 inch above the bottom and they just screw in...they are designed to 'sink' into the plastic so make sure you are screwing them in straight and level.

If you live in cold climates that get really bad like I do, I'm going to use a small stock tank heater that is rated at 500 amps...anything bigger and you'll melt your plastic...eek!

Important!! When you make the "switch-over" it is imperative that you remove all other water sources...ALL OF THEM. What I did was I sat in there and "flicked" the little stainless steel thingie repeatedly. Eventually one of my girls came over to see what the sounds were and voila!! I'd say within an hour they were all using it. Make sure that you don't snap the bucket lid down tight, just one or two clicks-worth...no air flow, no water.

Just an idea for you, wishing you well, and best of luck to you!!
