watering nipples

Are these the same kind of nipple that the big big chicken houses use? The commercial ones? I want to do something with a bucket and the nipples so I can keep the water clean.

Neil hooked me up. I put 3 nipples on a 5 gal bucket for our 20 chickens. They are quite happy.

I *may* add another bucket, just to increase the amount of water they have when we go away for a couple days.

Believe me, I asked lots of stupid questions and Neil was quite helpful! I think it ended up something like $10 for 4 nipples, including shipping, but was well worth it for the extra help.

We loosely cover the bucket (check with local bakery for 'icing' buckets) and LOVE how much CLEANER the water is. We were constantly cleaning pine shavings and other stuff out of the water. Now...nothing

They are either essentially or exacly the same. However there are no industrial applications where they are used in plastic buckets. There are several very inventive ways that nipple drinkers are used in small scale productin that cause the manufacturer reps scratch their heads. I get a kick out of showing those guys the numerus ways the products are used.
Most of the ones I sell are from Holland. My guy Jan just shakes his head and says in a typical Dutch fashion - "Is not pos sible"

I got mine on ebay with free shipping. I have previously bought them from Cuttler (?) supply and paid full shipping. Still a bargain, when you compare to other waterers!

Oh, and I put them on the plastic containers that cat litter comes in. They have a screw top so water stays clean, and there's easily room for 2 nipples per container!

Thank you for this post! I was trying to figure out a way to use a clear bottle (so I can see the water level) that was big enough for 4 hens but not gigantic since I'll be changing it every 1 - 2 days regardless (not a 3/5 gallon pail). The cat litter jug would be perfect! We used one of the 25lb litter tubs with a hog pan to make our feeder, I never thought of using the smaller jugs for water. So thank you!!! I have some watering nipples coming from Ebay in a couple days, I can't wait to try this out.

I've seen some made out of igloo coolers - keeps water warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer. Just a thought.

Super cool, Thanks Neil, I know someone in my town that has chicken houses that said he would give me some, but he did the same thing, "You are going to have to get this special hose, etc etc, don't think it is possible without water pressure regulator, etc." HAHA!! Hahahahaaa! I knew it would work if they were even remotely similar. Gravity never takes a day off!

And the idea with the clear bottles...AWESOME!! Yes, to check for cloudiness and water level, yay!!

I think if I stick some watermelon on them, that should work. Apparently that is like crack cocaine for my babies!!

A neat idea, that has worked well for me (as I am kind of lazy) is to take your five gallon bucket and put a simple float control anchored to the side and attached to a hose. The float keeps the 5 gallon bucket filled, and the five gallon bucket keeps the water pressure at a couple psi for the nipples. The float valve can be bought at any tractor supply store for under 10 dollars, they also have them in large fish stores, as they use the floats to top off water in tanks or ponds. Or, if you have an old toilet laying around, use the float from that in a similar way (though you will need to get adapters and various other plumbing parts for it.) This is assuming you dont want to pay $65 for a pressure regulator for your water (I know I dont).

GREAT IDEA!!! I obtained nipples on eBay with free shipping, it was the best deal around. I used some old Tupperware containers, the avocado green one's from the 70's that have the "special" lid on top. I am going to switch to one of those plastic Thermos or Igloo liquid jugs...EXCELLENT. Thanks for the idea!
