watering nipples

We removed the other waterer and tapped the nipples until there was a drop of water on the end and flicked one of the three nipples, just to make them curious. We have several hens who are especially curious and get into everything we do. So as we hung the bucket, they were watching.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but we hung the new waterer with the nipples in the same place as the original waterer, just higher.

From there, as some have said, 'Monkey see, monkey do.' Once one or two do it, the others will do it. The Roos were slower than the hens, but all within the first few hours.

We kept the original waterer handy, just in case anyone looked dehydrated or in distress, but didn't need it.

Hi everyone,

Newbie here from the interiors of North Borneo. Recently got into chicken rearing. I have a question regarding watering nipples, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask. I have difficulty in acquiring the watering nipples here where I am, so the question is, is there ANY way to build your own watering nipples? Sorry for the question. I have searched but can't seem to find apart from those sold online. Any help would be much appreciated.

I got the chicken nipples on ebay....we put them into 5 gal bucket and a juice container for inside the coop....can't tell you how well they work since we are just getting our chicks on Monday...lol

we ordered our nipples from amazon, they came in 5 packs. to teach the chickens to use them, we drilled some into the bottoms of soda bottles and hung them in their brooder, but we still used the traditional waters. when we moved everybody outside we switched to the largest size gatorade bottle, eventually, we found that any clear bottles would grow funk, so we spray painted the bottles white. i would suggest adding a strip of tape before painting, after the paint dries it could be peeled off, leaving a clear stripe that would make checking the water level easy. when our flock grew, we added two tractor supply 'shopping' buckets with 3 nipples each. last fall we added 'bucket safe' horse trough ice melters from tractor supply, and we have not had any trouble with freezing. i would caution that we found that any tightly closed system, like a bottle with the nipple in the bottom and the cap screwed on tight, may not allow the water to drip through the nipple. i am not sure why, that is just how it seemed to work for us. we have the caps on just enough not to fall off, but not on tight. we still use some of the gatorade bottles under the chicken houses, in addition to the buckets. so all of the chickens can drink without having to huddle together. we did add a grown chicken to our flock, that had never seen or used the nipple system before, and she adapted within a day or two. no one else we know locally uses these.
