I came home from work this evening , I was so shocked to find my chickens poop all red! It was so bad that I couldnt find what causes this ! and then came along my 5 year old neighbor, he said he gave them watermelon !! whew ! Thank goodness my chickens were all fine and very spoiled !

Had a similar shock when I found bright vivid green poop in the chicken pen. Thought they got into something toxic, but they had not free ranged since the day before. Then it dawned on me, I had given them a head of red cabbage a couple hours earlier. Red cabbage does a radical color shift on the way through a chicken.

I hope you make a point of telling your 5 year old neighbor that he needs to ask you before he feeds the chickens anything. Thankfully it wasn't anything toxic.

A friend of mine had a different kind of shock many years ago when her puppies boo boos just about glowed when she went to clean their pen at night. Turns out they ate some glow in the dark crayons when her kids were playing with them.

Word to the wise - purple cabbage will make their poop dark teal as well so you will also want to keep this in mind at treat time to avoid unnecessary shocks. hehe [IMG]

If you let them have overripe persimmons, their poop will be rusty orange. I FREAKED [IMG] one morning when I opened the hen house to find that under their roosts.
