My japanese bantam had a prolapse today and she was taken to the vet and they were able to fix it but I want to do as much as I can to help prevent another one from occurring. One of the things that I heard contributes to it is when your chicken is overweight. How much does the average japanese bantam weigh? My friends and I had alwaysd joked about her being a little on the tubby side... How do you help your chicken loose weight? Once she gets back from the vet she is going to be put on "bed" rest in a dark dog crate for about a week to discourage egg production to help her oviduct settle down, so she wont get much exercise for the next week. Is there a special diet I can start her on? Right now she is just on the the simple Layena laying feed and of course water. What can I do to help her loose weight? Thanks!

I would make sure she has plenty of grass and weeds to fill up on, even if you have to pull the weeds by hand. Allow her to eat all the veg she wants then after she has filled up on greens give her a restricted amount of her feed. She will want less feed this way and feel full. And as Mountain Peeps said no treats. No matter how full we feel there is always room for desert.
