We ARE MOVING.....ALABAMA.. UPDATE pg.14

Hey now, that sounds just like the Lower Peninsula of Michigan... Almost an island in the middle of a northern lake, and the black bears pretty much stick to the very northern woods/UP.

Prattville is rather small. Should be fairly quite and an easy place to live. One thing about Alabama-it is not a mass transit sort of place. Cars are necessary to get around. Most places are fairly openminded about animals and such, just be sure to check into the town ordinance and neighborhood covenants. From Prattville it is an easy drive to Birmingham or Huntsville. Chattanooga and Atlanta are both within fairly easy driving distance as well. Mobile would be about 4ish hours. Don't listen to the nonsense you hear about Alabama and the deep South. In most cities there are very few problems with discrimination and racism. The one complaint that some would have is that the area is fairly conservative and has a large number of Southern Baptists who often try to interject their beliefs into politics. Summers are hot, but winters are pretty mild. There are definitely worse places to live!

Pratsville is a nice small town.

The cost of living isn't bad but like every where else it is rising. You would be considered to be above the average household income for the area at 65K.

As someone else mentioned you would be within easy driving distance to Decatur, Athens, Huntsville and Birmingham.

A great place to buy locally raised and slaughtered meat, at very reasonable prices in Cullman ( and no it's not the Smith's Farm that they show on billboards )

Depending on what you wanted to spend for a house, but you can find some very nice one's with land for not a whole lot of money.

Bamachicken is from AL....... She might be able to give you some info.

That is a fantastic salary for the area. Prattville has a fairly low cost of living. Gas is fairly cheap too.

I agree 65K a year would be upper middle class in that area. I live just Northwest of there in TN and my 3 bedroom 2 bath home on 1.5 acres appraised at 105K back before the slump in the market. I might get 80k if I sold it right now. Alabama is even cheaper to buy. That should give you a general idea.

It looks like we will be making a decision by the end of the weekend. If DH decides to take this other job, it will be in Alabama around the Prattville area. It will be a promotion, so the company will pay to relocate...a definite plus!

Now, I have a house to sell

I should be able to get about double what we paid for it 3 years ago and we have about 40% equity.....So I have my fingers crossed

Thank goodness I have a friend who knows real estate, I will be able to do for sale by owner and avert the high cost of an agent!

Well, you've been fortunate. I had a lovely pet dog get bitten by a water moccasin and killed practically right in front of me.

We had to "relocate" multiple water moccasins within yards of the house we have south of the M-D line. I really don't care much for going out of my house and having one coiled up in front of my front stoop...

I dont really think it has to do with me being lucky. Snake bites dont happen near as often as the movies make out. I spent 13 years as the main medical first responder for this community that is full of snakes an I have never had to respond to a snake bite case.

I just asked my 84 year old grandmother an she has never known anyone that has been snake bit. Okefenokee Joe, The guy that lives an works in the Okefenokee swamp studying snakes claimed to only have been bitten once an that was by a snake in a bag. It does happen but lightning strikes seem more common.

Snakes are generally docile. Usually snake bites happen when you step on them at night or try to grab them/kill them. I've only ran into a couple of poisonous snakes and we both kept our respectful distance from each other. Even had a water moccasin slither over my foot one. It was more interested in getting the heck away from me then biting. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Of course accidents can happen but the most common biters are the least dangerous at least.

I have to agree with you there. I live in the Mojave Desert: Home of every type of rattlesnake ever known to man. Usually, there is one or two strikes a year here. With locals I should say. Flatlanders the go poking in every hole they find when they pull over to relieve themselves is another story altogether.

Hello from bama...prattville is nice enough. Thats a decent salary too, you should be comfy if you don't go nuts or have a lot of debt. I'll actually be driving through there tomorrow. Have to chew your air in the summer before you swallow it, but thats the south for you. You won't be cold..and spring is already in full swing now...trees blooming and budding all over. Let me know if I can help. God bless.
