WE did it..we trained our girls to roost!! (Pix ! )

They're so cute! My hens are free-range, but they use the barn at night. When I get chicks, I lock them in the barn every night. They always huddle on the ground and when they're old enough they roost themselves. I don't know but I've never had that problem before!

Good job...

... but, they look a little crowded and it will get worse as they grow older... do you have another roost that they can use also?

Yep....not shown in the pix , is also a ladder roost in the coop with 4 or 5 rungs that they totally ignored...

...right under the big limb roost they all chose to roost on ( highest ) You all said they like the highest roost and will go for it , they did!

So hubby and I are gonna go to the woods today and cut down another sassafrass tree trunk (s) and just make 2 or 3 long horizontal roost , and take out that ladder roost. Thanks for the advice....I thought they looked rather cramped up there in a row...!

You say 25 girls, but nothing about the roo? In the second pic. The first Barred Rock from the right is a young Rooster.

Matt

Edited to add that in the first pic, one of the EEs with it's head stuck straight out looks like a roo too.

OH yes....I forgot...we just recently discovered the one BR is a roo, but didnt know about the EE being one!? I got so used to saying ''the girls''....keep forgetting I might have a roo or 2!

Great! I really would like to wind up with a couple of roosters to round out my flock....so that makes me happy if that EE turns out to be a roo!!
