My absolute favorite hen daisy passed away last night :( she was a 1 yr old beautiful black Langshan. I noticed on Sunday she seemed a little off balance when you would put her down, she was out and about eating etc but didn't seem like herself.... Then yesterday afternoon I noticed that she was still in the coop on her roost, we took her out and she ate a little and snuggled down in comfy spot and went back to sleep. I checked her over good and found poultry lice that I immediately treated with sevin dust (in a nylon) I put her in the garage to keep her comfy and away from the others. I checked on her b4 bed and all the bugs were dead! She had a few bites of cheese and I said goodnight. This morning she was gone. Can sevin dust or lice kill them? I can't find any open wounds and I really had to look to find the bugs. I just can't help but feel that I did something wrong or that I could have helped her more. Such a sad feeling

I'm so sorry for the loss of your hen Daisy. Unfortunately, yes, lice or mites can kill our birds. As they take the blood they are taking the 'life' out of them, making them weaker and weaker.
Unless your hen ingested a large quantity of the Sevin, I doubt it was that.

You will need to treat your other birds and make sure their housing is cleaned out and treated as well. To help keep down further infestations there are some things you can add to their dusting box. In mine I use DE, sand, wood ash or barn lime and peatmoss. Until this winter, when my birds lost the use of their run and dusting box, I had never had mites or lice once. Can't say that any more, but a year and a half without has proved my mix in their box. You could even add some Sevin dust into the mix as well. You wouldn't need a lot. To have this do it's job, it must be kept dry as DE and wood ash or lime are pretty much useless when wet or damp.

Again, I am so very sorry about Daisy.

Thank you, I will treat them all today. I wouldn't wish anything bad on any of them, but Daisy was just the sweetest, most gentle girl you'd ever meet. She was a loner with the flock and wanted to be more a pet then a flock bird. <3
