That is our problem! I see the pit bull also. The shelter says border collie/retriever which is why we were interested. We don't want a pit bull because of all the other animals. We have a very timid, skitish cat that needs a puppy that won't put her into panic mode for weeks. Does anyone see any border collie/retriever? There is a pitbull ban in some of the cities in the county where this puppy is so I suspect labeling one a pitbull is a last resort breed choice.

The colring is border collie, the face isn't bully breed at all neather is his front legs , here's my puppy, he has a odd puppy shaped but isn't bully mis though I questioned that for a long time, he's older now and his face is way more like a labs( colored like a sheppared, marked like a huskey):

Hon, forget the breed, what is the puppy like? That individual puppy. I have a Hienz 57 puppy, who definitely has herding breeds in him and has no bully breeds (everything else is uncertain, lol) who is currently giving my cats fits. 3 out of my 5 cats whip the snot out of him daily. My sister's pure, red-nosed pit has NEVER from day one given either of her cats any trouble.

The difference is, I picked the take-charge puppy of the litter. The charge right up and untie your shoelaces, bold as brass, full of himself pup. I want a dog to train as a working dog, so I picked the dog who would get himself sent to the pound by 8 months without the kind of owner who will work him. He'd probably make a really lousy housepet if that's ALL I wanted him for.

My sister wanted a happy, easy mellow dog. So she picked the quiet puppy, the laid back, takes a few minutes to get to you and then rolls over in your lap puppy. The puppy always at the bottom of the puppy pile and last through the gate.
She is a GREAT housepet. Sweet, funny, loving easy to train. A harsh NO sends her to the ground. (lol, mine looks at me and wags his tail and says "what? you want me to save you some?"

So if this individual puppy seems like a sweet, mellow soul, go for it. If he is the pup in the litter that was first to greet you, then you might be getting more dog then you want.
It is impossible to guess the breed of a puppy so young, you have to have seen the parents. Puppies do a good job of looking alike, shelters tend to go by color. And most labs and mixes will look exactly like most pits and mixes at that age.

So, the question is, having spent some time with this puppy, does he seem like a good match for your family? Does he race around, or lie in your laps? How much of his time is spent right next to you, and how much exploring the room? These are the important questions. The individual is more important then the breed.

No because the puppy is 3.5 hours away. I agree that breed isn't everything, but because of the distance that is all I can go on at the moment. Puppies are so hard to find these days and the prices are amazingly high in some shelters. I may have found an australian shepherd/lab mix much closer.

Can you ask the rescue? Dothey know anything about the mother? Have they temperament tested? Will they if you ask them to?
Here's a link to a well-known test. My puppy is 1s and 3s (he's mouthy), my sister's dog was 3s and 4s

I can't recommend getting a dog without meeting it first. I looked online at the Olympia paper and saw this ad, might these be closer to you?

HALF PUREBRED Chocolate Lab & German Shepherd mix, 8 wks old. Adorable, good family dogs. $95. $95 360-807-0543.

I know some rescues are insane, but in my experience, if you go round to vet's offices, they ALWAYS know of some dogs needing homes and who has puppies. You could try that. Good luck on your search!

If the puppy is raised right it should be fine no matter the breed, although there are exceptions. As for breed I don't see any pic, looks more like some of the smaller terrier types to me. I also do not see any border collie or retriever. Personally he's adorable and I'd go for it! That said when it comes to breeds I'd worry more about the smaller terriers then pits anyway.
