hi im new but ok so on sunday my brother and his girlfriend came into my room with a chicken in his hands and told me that they saw a guy throw the chicken outside his truck while at the lake. He then gave me the chicken and said i have to take care of it! So yeah it was a weird day. So far i have had the chicken for 4 days and she is super healthy i been feeding her chicken feed and oatmeal. I have been keeping her inside in a dog kennel so far and I take her outside everyday when im out of school. We are planning on buying a chicken coop this weekend for her. I am posting here today because i have a few questions:

1. breed: I think shes a new Hampshire red but im not sure and would like your opinion

2. Age: i think she is at least 5 weeks because she doesn't have her waddle or comb yet. She also chirps kinda like a chick.

3. Ducks: we(me and my family) never planned on getting chickens and we were instead gonna get ducks this summer. I was wondering if it was ok to have her live with our ducks but no other chickens or if i have to get more chickens to keep her happy.

Those are my three questions. Sorry its so hastily written i have to go clean my kitchen before my mom gets home but yeah i would like to keep spicy because shes a very sweet chicken.

EDIT: here's a clip of spicy cheeping( I just added it because its so cute)

I am by no means an expert on this but I have had chickens, ducks and geese. I think you should keep the little girl inside as a pet for as long as you can. Eventually you have to move them into a coop because the dust is to much. Mine are all treated as such and they follow me everywhere, jump in my lap for cuddles and have great personalities. Ducks are just as fun, although they are a bit messy with water and their poop, but make great companions. When I’d let them free range the chickens always stayed in our backyard, ate all the yucky bugs, weeded my raised beds etc. But the ducks, as you can see in my profile pic, were the total instigators for leaving the backyard and leading them all down out driveway to visit the neighbors. 😉

Sorry, probably way more wordy than you wanted. I just love them all so much.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If that chick is close to 5 weeks and has that much red in the comb, it's more likely a cockerel than a pullet. Which would explain why the scum bag tossed him out the window
Oh really? i assumed spicy was a hen because i thought roosters were much louder and had big tails ( I still am learning about chickens ). Do i have to worry about possible aggression from spicy in the future if she is a rooster? Are rosters aggressive to their owners?

you birds sound awesome! I will try to keep spicy as close as possible to me as she is very young and lonely but i will have to get her outside soon as she isn't getting enough sunlight and is cooped up all day when i'm at school :(. I'm hoping we can get some other chickens and ducks to keep her company as soon as possible.

We don't know how old he or she is, and she is not that red. With out the age or another of the same breed for comparison gender can be tricky. If you are still unsure after a few weeks post more pics including pics of its back and any changes in the comb. Also Most roosters are not aggressive. Some make great pets.

Hi welcome to BYC. Congratulations on your new chick. It's best for chickens to live with chickens. It is also safer, a male duck can kill a chicken by breeding with them.
I would buy one or two pullets to live with her.
Good luck!
I don't worry about male ducks as were only getting females. But i agree that i should get her at least 1 other chicken so she doesn't feel like the odd one out
