Man, I wish I had a bear in my yard! I'm getting hungry with all this talk of sausage!

Maybe you could send that bear, some deer, and some hog my way? They are most welcome in my yard, I wouldn't even have to get dressed and stalk into the woods.. My freezer is getting a bit empty.

Well, don't I feel down right silly at this point. Wrote about this topic at work (don't tell my boss) and then signed on this morning and WOW! I told my husband (now you know my gender) what I wrote and that I felt stupid saying "Bears don't eat chickens" when I thought about for 2 seconds and he was so sweet to explain that no solid wood door or for that matter anything will stop a bear for getting in where it wants. I agree with the one BYC member that we do need to try and live with nature as much as possible.

Unfortunately, in our area we had a lot of fires last year - thousands and thousands of acres lost within site of our house - and we have begun to see all kinds of new wild life on our property. So it is not surprising that we have now had two bears this year.

As far as Fish and Game - they will not do much if anything. Neighbors who have lived here for 25+ years (we have been here only 4+) say each time they call they say use ammonia about the entire edge of your property. Well, we both have 8 acres and some in a deep canyons, plus neighbor said didn't work.

Well sorta, but I like pork and chicken - so we maybe shouldn't draw too many parallels here.
I think I might be careful where I put a daycare center, though.
I mention it, as this was a target of bears in NJ recently - well the dumpster behind the daycare was. It presumably held, well... maybe some diaper treats.

When people move into the country they have to expect some problems whether it be bear,bobcat, fisher, fox, etc.

Electric fencing only seems to work on bears if it has some serious jolt. I have electric fencing around my coops and the bears still go right throught it. As far as the lighting or the hose trick mentioned it might work for some but I newver had any luck with it. Frozen paintballs worked a little though.

And BTW, to the OP I failed to mention in my previous post they definitely love chickens and love to rip apart coops. I had some pics on here a while back with some bear damage.
