It took my girls about two weeks to stop dropping "rubber eggs" under their roost. Now they're laying perfect large brown eggs .

We received our second "normal" egg today!! the first egg that was normal was a really light light brown almost cream colored egg. The one we got today was a medium rich brown color. Do they lay different shades normally or could I have a second layer?

Congrats...could be either.

Butt checks under the tail will tell the tale.
Vent Appearance:
Dry, tight, and smaller - usually not laying.
Moist, wide, and larger - usually laying.

Pelvic Points, feel for the 2 bony points(pelvic bones F-F) on either side of vent:
Less than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means not laying.
More than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means laying.
(Spacing is relative with chickens size and humans finger size.)
