We got our first egg!! Yay!! However it's not too pretty :/ I looked around the coop to see if there were any signs of a broken egg as that is exactly what it looks like on the outside. My husband said maybe it's just since it's the first one. We only have 3 chickens so learning as we go! Can anyone tell me what is on the outside and if I should wash it off? If so, the best way to clean it? Sugar, our California White is 16.5 weeks. Thank you!

It looks like the hen just laid a strange egg. If you are going to eat it I would definitely wash it and use it quickly since you don't want rotten yolk (or whatever that is) on the outside. Next egg will probably be normal.

Ok thank you. Do you suggest keeping it in the fridge, we will use it tomorrow!

Yea! I get to join the new egg club! Yesterday we got 2 eggs, both brown, one weighs 1 1/8oz (the small end has been pecked) the other 2oz. Today we got a while one from Elsa, our White Leghorn that weighs 1.5oz. Boy, she made a lot a squawking for close to 2 hours my hubby said! We have another in the nesting box right now, Anna, a Rhode Island Red.

Is it common for them to squawk and take a while when they first start laying?
