Yeah! We got our first egg today from our australorp pullet! My question is when should we expect another one? and how often will they lay when they first start laying?

When pullets first begin to lay, it can be pretty sporadic. Also expect some soft-shelled eggs, or eggs with no shell at all. After a few weeks, they should get into a routine of laying about 5 or 6 eggs a week.

Thanks!

some dont lay soft shelled eggs at all and some do but the first egg hurts and im pretty sure they will take a little break for the next one. sometimes they jump right into laying one egg after another after another and so on it really depends on the chicken congrats on the first egg i got a first egg today as well im so happy about it

My little pullet has been laying every day except once, since she started--at 4 months! Be sure and put out some oyster shell for them. She has been cowing the oyster shell down, and I suspect the others have started eating it too!

Thanks for all the replies! I'm sure it was strange for our girl, we found the egg outside, under the tree right next to the waterer. My kids said Miss Mable was hunkering down alot, and they thought it was weird! My 8 yr old found the small brown egg, and could'nt get in the house quick enough with it to tell us! We're so proud of her!
