After reading the stickies we decided the little guy needed some help. We could see his beak was free but that was it. The membrane had dried and he just couldn't make any progress. DH used tweezers to peel away the shell and then used a Q-Tip to wet the membrane. The little guy started peeping in earnest then but still could not tear the membrane any further. DH even had a hard time of it using the tweezers - it seemed to be in double layers at times! Long story short, Little Bit is free from his membrane and back in the bator to dry off a bit. I was really hesitant about helping him out but I sure am glad we did. I really think he never would've made it on his own. I asked DH if he felt good saving a life. He said "No! It's probably another rooster!"
Since we already had the incubator opened we decided to candle all remaining eggs. Five more were definitely goners, DH heard peeping from one and we have four that we just couldn't be sure of so we're leaving them for now. I am really bummed about not hatching out any Hamburgs again but I feel a little better knowing this hatch was not a complete loss like the first one. We've got two Faverolles with another hopefully joining us soon and a Silkie/Faverolle baby. Jacob comes home from camp tomorrow and I can't wait to tell him the news!
