Im at my witts end. This dumb coon (thing) is picking off my birds one a night. My DH is going to board up all the holes in the coop this weekend. I don't know if coons can climb barn walls but the holes are at the top like 10 or so feet up. The coons been here for a whille just haven't been able to catch it. It was helping it's self to cat food by opening and dumping the tote over. Now that i ran out of cat food its helping its self to my birds. We are thinking of placing a live trap in the coop with cat food and seeing if that will work. Or should i just give up and give it cat food as a piece offering. I really want it to die. Im designing a new coop that will be fort knox and then some. Any tips? Thanks in advance. ( I think its a coon)

I wouldn't give it a peace offering-that is just encouraging it to think your place is an easy food source.

I am thinking that your original unintentional peace offering is part of what got you into war. Nature does not make peace it takes advantage.

Trap and shoot. Is the coon really the "dumb thing" here?

Coop and flock security first tho. Obviously you have issues with that to have had so much trouble. And to be fair, he sure did give you plenty of warning that he was hungry and that he was there as a regular customer. Use a havahart trap and marshmallows. If in a subdivision and can't shoot him, just throw him in a creek, trap and all. Good riddance. They have tremendous homing instincts, so don't even think of rehoming him to prey on someone elses chooks.

Set a have a hart trap outside your coop (not inside) near where you think it's getting in. You can bait it with all kinds of things. Cat food works well. A live trap is your best bet, because it's very likely that you'll catch something other than the coon at some point. There also may be several coons going after your birds, so if you catch one, keep setting the trap. We've caught all kinds of things in ours. We let the cats go, and everything else got buried in our yard.

I have a friend who's grandpaw said he didn't believe in killing the animals that he caught. He'd tie a rope to the trap and throw it into his pond. He'd say "If that coon can hold his breath for 30 minutes, he's free to go." LOL!

I would never give any thing killing any of my livestock a "peace offering". that said......we have horses, cows, pigs, chickens, trust me i would not take the time to trap and relocate any thing killing any of my animals...why?... because your passing the problem to some one else!!!!!..........yes i have shot a few kritters in the last few years....if you can't or don't have the heart to then call your local animal control and ask them to dispose of it!
