I did make some friends with the store owners, but then, I was able to somewhat relax with them behind the bulletproof glass. At lot of hard working folks in all colors who were trying to make a living in hell.
It wasn't nice though when I'd show up hours after a robbery, where a 2x4 is holding the shot out door shut, and the owner informs me the clerk was held at gunpoint, "but it's OK, they didn't get much money, and just stole some cigarettes".
ETA: There are some nice neighborhoods in Flint, and some of the architecture downtown and by UofM is neat. However, where most cities are nice with pockets of bad, Flint is bad with very, very few pockets of nice.
