So, we wake up Christmas morning and go out with the ducks while Birthday Cake is baking. No Salt. She is nowhere to be seen. We panic. We had just cut her flight feathers on one side because the finally got air and we knew she needed to stay put. There were no holes under the fence she could possibly fit under. We searched the whole yard, twice. There was no sign of a struggle in case the local horned owl got hungry. My husband and younger son drove around the neighborhood just in case.

Nothing.

We opened presents. We had birthday cake for Jesus. But, Salt was in the back of our minds.

Our neighbor's daughter came over because her volleyball landed in our backyard and was asking for us to get it for her. No problem.

I walked to the back and what do I see? Salt enjoying the Christmas watermelon we got for the ducks! So... where had she been!?!?!

There was one place I did not look, mostly because I haven't given this plastic planter a second thought in a long time. When we first got the ducks, I took an old plastic planter that was about 18 inches tall and 14 inches in diameter and cut out a "door" for the ducks to get cozy in if they needed to hide. But, they never used it and it got put next to the house and forgotten. When I picked it up, 3 eggs were sitting in a hollowed out, smooth hole in the ground.

We got another today! We hadn't thought about checking on any layers because none of the girls had shown the signs of laying. What we didn't take into account was that none of us went outside before 10am... She was laying between 9 and 10 am. Ha!

Now, we are wondering if her sister is ready to start laying as well. How fun and what a cool Christmas surprise!

What a beautiful Christmas present from your duck! :hugs
Are you planning to let her have Ducklings or will you eat the eggs?

Unfortunately, we don't have the room in our backyard for babies. Plus, more than 8 requires a city permit that you buy and renew. So, until we have land out in the country, we are eating the eggs for now.

Our first meal was breakfast for dinner. My son asked for his egg to be scrambled and he LOVED it. He now only wants duck eggs. My husband and I fried ours.

I did candle the eggs just to make sure. She has laid every day since the 23rd (our guess). Today, though she didn't want to come out of the duck house and I was able to pet her through the roof since she wouldn't move. Eventually, she stood up and I grabbed the egg. They are the size of my palm. Her first was the size of a normal chicken egg, but the rest have been large.
