I was woken by one in CA a few years ago - at 3 something in the morning I thought a BOMB had gone off.

Edit to add my kids slept RIGHT through it.

Debbie how far is Apple valley from Barstow, I cannot remember now that was early 80's and my brain is frozen....

It's pretty much instantaneous. the epicenter is Ludlow - out past Barstow. Close to me. Not so close that things fell. But close enough that I almost jumped for the doorway and I am not afraid of earthquakes....
