We live on a lake- Bad or Good idea for ducks?

Ours use the community lake at the bottom of the property. I asked the Lake Association for permission in advance, and the none of the neighbors ever complain. Who doesn't love ducks, anyway? But it is important to ask the ownership (whether that's an association or whatever), because the ducks will go where they please. Mine forage in the neighbors's yards, and the neighbors's chickens forage in mine. It's all good.

Mine do come home at night *most* of the time. The trick, I've learned, is to feed them only in their pen and only in the late afternoon. They learn quickly to assemble in the backyard and wait for me to open up their pen and feed them. They will sometimes choose to skip a meal and spend the night on the lake. I have never lost one to a predator while they were sleeping on the pond. Generally, mine like to stay down there when it's snowy and/or icy. I think the water feels better than hard, cold ground. They'll also sometimes sleep down there in summer, presumably because the forage is so good they don't mind missing a meal once in a while. But they never do it two nights in a row--those layer pellets are too good to miss very often.

Good luck however you decide!

Ohhhhhhh geez!! Now that I think about it, I knew that!! lol

Thanks for the reply, I will definitely talk to the neighbours. One is a family friend and one has said chickens are no bother and he is two lots over BUT I do realize they will go everywhere so I will try to ask neighbours. There is a picnic held in the summer that everyone attends so maybe I will ask people then. Also- We figure if we ever get complaints we will sell the ducks OR move them to the farm we have. There is no water there but we actually have an old hot tub lining that would work great.

I think we may go for it, possibly some Magpies, they are so pretty. I just love ducks, they are so goofy looking.

I think the best way is to get some really young ducklings ( preferably day old) and get them imprinted on you..... they will follow you everywhere, and this is the best time to train them, You could walk them to the water and go swimming with them and show them around. Provided they are fully imprinted they won't run away, they will think you are mum! I did that with my first 2 ducks five years ago..... We have a massive lake across the road ( size of approx150 football fields!) this is where they spend their day, they are trained to walk up 3 sets of stairs to get to thier pens in the garage! Since the first 2 the others just follow the original 2 until they know thier way independantly. And my ducks fly like wild birds.... and they always come home! Good luck, keep us posted.

Wow, that is exactly what I want! How beautiful and peaceful, to watch ducks swimming on a lake. Have you had any problem with boats or fishermen? Do the ducks tend to stay away from them? We have sea doos on the lake and fast boats (Our lake is HUGE) and I never even thought about it til this minute. But we have loons on the lake and they have been here for years. They come up pretty close to the dock sometimes, its cool. I think I will get a few ducks and train them and it will be fine. Although I do want a duck that can fly just in case it needs to get away from something, so I might get magpies or rouens.

Exciting!!

We live RIGHT on the lake, we have a big sloping hill that goes right down to the water and its very private. I can't see ducks bothering people, I would love it if someone on the lake had ducks that came to visit, that is so cool. But I also dont know what kind of mischief ducks can get up to LOL!

Well, in the beginning people use to try to catch the 'stray ducks' but now everyone knows them, the ducks tend to swim fairly close to the bank, so the boats aren't an issue. The only breeds of domestic duck that can really fly are Call ducks, other bantam ducks and Muscovy's. BTW what's a loon?

We let our pekins(3 adults, 13 grown ducklings range with chickens, but because we have unfenced areas that go through dense bush on 2 1/2 acres, the ducks take off and wander wherever they please.. into neighbour's yards. Oddly enough, they come running back when called, tho they remain skitterish with people even tho they were raised with lots of cuddling and attention. Our females have nests of hay in the chicken coop and always lay there. They always come back at dark with the chickens.
They are adorable and we love them. I've been surprised that they aren't that friendly. I thought they would be. I really tried to get them used to us.. handled them and interacted with them a lot. They used to love playing in tubs of water on the kitchen floor and taking baths. Now they swim in puddles, kids' swimming pools and hardly ever want to go in the huge pond we had excavated last summer! Who knew?!
