We made the front page....and I need help

I'm still wondering about something that was mentioned yesterday. Sonia said she was never informed about the meeting. As I posted earlier, the email that I sent to the paper asked about publiciZing the fact that there was to be a meeting. My email was never shown in the comments section, but from my own experience, I know that a meeting held for these township matters must be properly advertised, and if it isn't then it can't be held. No matter if the officials show up, they are legally not able to do any kind of business at the "gathering" (can't call it a meeting if it isn't publicized as such) can't make any decisions or take any action on any issues. If they do, they have broken the law. If this meeting was called quickly and Sonia had no way of knowing that there was a meeting, then they have to start over. In the meantime, sonia can get friends and family together and print emails from supporters to take with her to the next meeting.

They MAy have advertised it in the paper....I don't know as I don't get the paper. The emails are a wonderful idea......is it ok if I post my email address here so people can send them to me?

I left my comment on today's post. Let's see if that gets taken away also. This truly is utterly insane! Sorry you are having to deal with it Sonia.

I wrote the following response to the reporters e-mail addy:

Dear Ms. Hill
I am writing in disagreement to this article. And I, like many others that have written to your paper, wish this and other responses to the article be printed in defence of Mrs. Farley, since she was unfairly treated throughout this process, and was not contacted for response to defend herself. In other words this article was a one sided story...Not good business.
There are alot of good folks who keep house chickens successfully and have no problems and no odors...Ever heard of chicken diapers? Don't laugh, that is really what makes it work, and guess what? No poo everywhere. Most chickens are much quieter than a dog by all means, very friendly, they don't bite or peck if handled from birth. There are very few diseases associated with them that humans can actually contract.
Now I'll do a few comparisons for you on other house pets that nobody thinks about health issues with.
1. Mice/rats(need I say more?) And they bite.
2. Since I brought up mice, how about cats...Did you know children can get pinworms from cats, not to mention other illnesses? Plus there are bad bacteria in their claws and mouth. Cats do bite...Once my daughter got bit on the finger by a cat and her finger swelled twice it's size within a couple hours and was hot. Doctor said it was because the cats was infected with cat-scratch fever(Bartonella henselae) . Small children cannot be watched every second so watch out for the litterbox. Oh, and as far as the litterbox is concerned, you aren't supposed to be cleaning/handling the litter if you're pregnant because of Toxoplasmosis . And male cats if not neutered will start to spray in the house. Cats can also spray and poo in the school play area at night when they roam(kids play there). How healthy is that?
3. Snakes, depending on the breed, can be very dangerous and can carry Salmonella, and they bite.
4. Also turtles, lizards, frogs, and other reptillian animals can be carriers of Salmonella, and they bite.
5. Dogs, mans best friend, have a much larger poo than a chickens and children can fall in it, play in it, get worms from it as well as other parasites. If the dog has Parvo then you can bet it's in the dirt where they use the bathroom and any other pup that comes into the yard can get it, or the neighbors dog from their kids tracking it home on their shoes...So there's another sick pup. Oh and did I mention that dogs can, and some will, bite? They can also get out of the backyard and roam school property and possibly bite a child.
6. Now on to the other exotics like Dagus, Chinchillas, hedgehogs(salmonella), and other imported "pets". Who's to say that they are the cleanest pets. THe Giant Gambian Rat for instance carries a disease called Monkeypox.
7. Pet birds such as parakeets, cockateils, parrots etc carry a virus called psittacosis. Can be very serious.
There are many other illnesses, viruses, parasites etc..I can name but I just wanted to make a point or two. If the health board wants to decide on the basis of health issues then they may as well take away all these other pets because lord knows we may get diseases from them. Now get serious, the lady wants a few chickens as pets and she is being denied this, why? Her house was kept clean, did not smell, it's obvious she is very careful about sanitation. The board of health needs to check their resources/information before they make such a hasty decision. There are cities all over the country that allows a certain number of hens as pets, usually no more than 5-6. And at least let her be involved in the meeting. I feel this was handled unfairly and in the wrong manner and should be re-examined.

Thank you,

Wow Cindy, my gosh, you sure know your stuff and how to write it effectively!!! Good job! Hope it gets through to them.

LOL...I've had dogs, cats, birds, fish, turtles, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, now chickens, soon ducks, and probably some I'm forgetting at some point in my entire life. I was always bringing something home and still am. Also I found an awesome article on the net ...I'll try to find it again and post the link.
