We are brand new to this site as well as to raising chickens :). We got these chicks from a farm at 5 days old and we were told that their father is completely black in coloring. They're now 8 weeks old and we've become completely attached (even our dog loves them!). Where we live we can't keep roosters so I'm hoping most are hens!
Molly:lightest in color and we think hen
Rosy: tiny! All black with some white on her face. She gets picked on, but my kids love her dearly!
Ana: black with red and recently her comb really started growing and we're fairly certain she's a he :(
Timoly and Camy: we're most confused with these two. All we can say for certain is that whatever they are, they're the same! Their combs aren't as red or developed as Ana's but they're more so than our other two. Plus they have always been and continue to be the largest and most aggressive. But their coloring is very even! We're really hoping they're hens as we will be sad to be left with only two!

Any thoughts are MUCH appreciated! I feel like I need to prepare my kids for the worst! Thanks!

The orange/black bird in the far left and the two barred ones in the far right look like cockerels. I'm not sure about the brownish one at the right, but I'm thinking pullet for now. The black bird appears to be a pullet.

If the dad is pure black, the striped ones are both boys, because the mother must have been barred to carry it over, and due to genetics, hens can only carry over the barring to their sons[in birds, the girls have two different chromosomes and males two the same!]. The black and red is a boy, The other two look like girls.

Well dang!! This is what I was afraid of! Even though they're coloring pattern is so even throughout you still think cockerel? I will be so sad, but I can't say this would be a huge surprise! Thanks for weighing in!!

Wow!! So interesting... Although also very disappointing! Thanks!! My husband will appreciate knowing the genetics behind it!
