We now own part of a cow. Raw milk question.

The goats that provide our milk had a less than normal productive week so we ended up buying 1/2 gal. store bought milk

So used to the good stuff that the store bought stuff has no flavor! DH complained to the neighbors. He and the neighbor guy are great PR guys for raw goat milk, they push it on everyone who comes by. My citified father was about chased around our kitchen by DH and a mug of milk. His mothert made homemade sausage, I'm not sure why he's so terrified of raw milk!

I bought a fresh doe last spring when we moved so my yearling doe could have a buddy and we could have milk. It was her first year milking and she dried up about a month ago. We have been buying store bought milk and my digestive issues are back and thats without mentioning the flavor.

I have 41/2 - 5 months before I get milk from my girls again. My yearling went to see a buck last month and the girl I just dried up went tonight.

My parents bought cow shares a few months ago and I've become addicted to the milk

And I can't put my exact finger on it, but I know my health-mental and physical-has improved since I started drinking that wonderful raw milk.

The owner of the dairy we own cow shares at gave Mom and I a grand tour when Mom & Dad first bought the shares and I'm so impressed by all the measures they take to ensure that the milk is safe-I wonder if commercial dairies are so careful! Boy oh boy did Mom have the paperwork to sign, though-she gave it to me to figure out. Good thing business law was one of the classes I took this summer!

I don't agree with the laws forbidding the sale of raw milk. If someone wants to buy raw milk, all they should have to do is sign a statement saying they understand the risks of drinking raw milk and will not hold the dairy and government responsible if they get sick from the raw milk. And of course, the dairy owners should follow generally accepted sanitation methods.

I raise LaMancha/French Alpine dairy goats and drink raw milk all the time. Before getting them, I could not drink milk from the store without getting sick. I feel I am healthier with the raw milk. I also think it tastes better. Our goats are dry now until February after they have kidded, and I won't even buy store milk. I'll just do without until we get the good stuff again!

I have seen studies linking pasteurized milk with both osteoporosis and diabetes. Countries like the United States where milk is almost always pasteurized have higher rates of these diseases than populations drinking raw milk. I'm not sure exactly how pasteurizing contributes to diabetes, but the calcium and other nutrients in pasteurized milk are cooked into a less useful form, so it is harder for your body to get them.

I also find that my raw milk is good longer than store milk. I did an experiment with it once, and it was still good tasting after TWO DAYS sitting at room temperature! (I don't recommend drinking it that way, but it just shows you that this is good stuff!)

I don't like that we can't sell the milk legally, since we get about a gallon a day from each of our does, which is way more than we need ourselves, even with making cheese. We give it away to friends or feed it back to the goats. I've got some regular customers among my friends who are going to 'buy' does from me, and then just pay me a weekly 'board' fee for their goat and then I give them the milk.

I love our goat milk. It has definitely improved my health and my husband's and now we are also eating wonderful cheeses, yogurt, drinking kefir, ice cream, ice milk, buttermilk, etc., etc. Recently began making butter and it's just so good.

We have to plan our gals dates so that we are never out of milk. I have other goat friends with goats and they don't plan them and go through withdrawal during kidding season....I just could not manage that.

I used to have terrible gastric reflux...off the meds... no longer an issue. My skin is better. My bones stronger (couldn't stand pasteurized milk)...When I was raised as a child, raw milk was what was delivered to our door in downtown Atlanta.... and it was yum. The minute the laws changed regarding pasteurization, I became so lactose intolerant....different chemical composition.

It is the universal milk. One thing regarding your milk, please store in glass containers it keeps better.

We have nubian/lamanchas and also lamancha milk goats. We've sold one of our young does and are training the new owners regarding goat care and handling. Also going with her will be a mature milker as they need company.

For those that haven't tried it, try raw goat milk, it's not the canned milk or pasteurized kind. It's all the difference in the world!

Right now there is |a HUGE court challenge about cow sharing and raw milk... everyone has their panties in a know till Michale Schmidt is finished in court. He was found not guilty of selling raw milk and then the govt appealed the ruling so back to square 1
