Our proposal got voted down. We had 3 council members in the committee and needed 2 yes votes. We had one that was a supporter from the get-go and we knew it. He did a FANTASTIC job, he even proposed a 1 year trial of it after it was obvious the other two were against. He refuted all of their outlandish claims - but they honestly had their minds made up before they showed up. You could tell. Neither of them apparently read, or chose not to listen, to any of the facts that have been provided to them over the past month or the statistical data from surrounding cities. The one councilwoman even suggested "what if people start slaughtering their chickens (and she laughed)" (even though our proposal states no slaughtering - she said people can choose to ignore the ordinance). The other councilman against suggested people drive out to the country and RENT farm land and build a coop out there to have chickens, then we could go visit them and collect our eggs. Gosh I honestly couldn't believe the arguments they were trying to make. She added "we'll have to hire a animal control person just to handle the chickens!" (even though I provided them all the data for all the surrounding chicken-allowing communities and spoke with animal control too). Overall we had a great showing of support though. Quite a few people got up to speak and they did a great job. I'm going to speak with the councilman that supported us and get his thoughts on if this could be revived within a different committee or if there's anything at all we can do. Very disappointed in those council members who couldn't even try it out. Also, it sure would've been nice to allow public input after they deliberated. But instead they had public input first.
I am dreading posting on our page on facebook. We have nearly 160 "likes" and people are so supportive and hoping this would go through. I am at a loss as to what to say without getting my emotions mixed in about those two council members and their crazy "what-if's".
