Weapon suggestion

Come on I'm reading some crazy stuff. Dynamite, poision the dog ETC. Get real if you shoot the dog in the head he will die. A 22 will kill a dog I promise you. Sure if you shoot him in the leg it won't. I shoot hogs on my farm with a 5MM its similar to a .17 & it kills the hogs.

remember if you shoot a dog and you are not a good shot chances are very high that it will not die right away - especially if you use a caliber that is too small - using a 22 for this purpose is not adequate - you may just wound it

Bigger bullets don't make up for poor shot placement, and while a quick death is desirable, it's not necessary as long as you stop the attack

It's better to use a rifle that is comfortable to shoot, and learn to shoot it well, than to try an compensate by using more power than needed.

This isn't a situation where shots will be at long range, since it's only legal to shoot most predators when they are IN THE ACT of attacking your animals.

If you're a poor shot with a 22, you'll be worse with anything larger

You can buy 500 rds of 22's for about the price of 20 243 cartridges, or 50 rounds in 17 HMR

555 rounds of .22 LR cost $20 way cheaper, but the bullet sucks. Jams and does many bad things to your gun. 50 17HMR bullets cost $10 high quaility stuff. Looks up pics of it compared to .22LR. A 17HMR shell is bigger than a 22LR shell but the 17HMR bullet is smaller than the 22LR bullet. So 17HMR has more power behind it. Tested and proven a 17HMR is better than a 22LR

Come to think of it - dynamite might be a good choice - why? - because of the clean up - you shoot a dog and now you got to worry about getting rid of the body - especially if it's a real big dog - with the dynamite there won't be any body to worry about - there will only be very small pieces laying arouond the yard which you don't even have to clean up - it invironmentaly clean - green all the way - another thing the dog won't suffer because he won't know what happened - it might be a little noisy but your neighbors won't know what happened either - just got to make sure that you use the right amount - too much and your chickens, your house and maybe even the neighborhood might go up - let me know if you decide to use dynamite - I want to watch - from a safe distance that is -

You say that you have talked to your neighbors and that is a GOOD thing , BUT, you have neighbors and a .22LR is a bad thing to shoot when you have them pesky people living close because .22's have a very bad reputation or ricocheting and that's because they don't move fast enough to liquefy on impact. The .22LR will go 1.5 miles.
The best Gun/Round to use is the .410 shot gun with #4's , This weapon will work on , Dogs, Coyotes, Birds, snakes, 2 legged snakes, cats and more.

You can buy a single shot for $100-$200 dollars or you can move up to an auto loader in the $400.00 to $500.00 range .

My vote = .410

I live 13 miles south of Lake Texoma in Texas , I don't have neighbors close [ Have 40 acres ] so I use a M4 in 5.56 nato and a 12ga.

so much so much so much passion on all sides...

I saw a coyote 2" outside the door to my chicken run in the kennel building yesterday morning... and all I had was my 45...

ok, so I could have hit him at that distance, but even though we're on 40 acres, and there's another 40 behind, I'm not happy shooting the 45 in this situation with no berm/backstop. I've been carrying it because I've been concerned about trouble in the two-legged variety... much much bigger than a coyote... and much closer too, should I need to actually shoot.

sooo.... I let this one off with a warning. (ok, I chased him into the field.)

but I will be picking up some buckshot for my 16 ga... or maybe my 20... or the 410... or the 12 gauge... going to go do a pattern test and see what I like best at the distance from my driveway to my kennel building. decide which I'm quickest to my shoulder with, which I like shooting the buckshot out of, which is the fastest to aim and easiest to carry.

gonna follow my own advice... which gun can I accurately and comfortably shoot that distance under dawn/dusk/dark conditions and get the job done.

I like all my shotguns, shoot them comfortably, and can hit trap with any of them. but I've never tried back-to-back comparison for this circumstance. time to find out.

y'all got favorites... it still comes down to which gun can the OP use effectively under those conditions. if I were the OP, I'd be thinking a lot about where that bullet might go beyond my intended target. even out here where I've got a lot more space than the OP does, it's a concern.

Something you need to consider is what is BEHIND your target. Do you live on property with enough acreage where a missed shot or a pass through shot will not endanger anyone or other property? MIF

Best advice I have heard. You don't need to shoot any living creature until you can place the bullet where it needs to be. If my dog is attacking your livestock and you kill it so be it. If you shoot it and it comes home there is going to be trouble
