We made the mistake of puting in a bunch of bark in the flowerbeds. Anyway it’s all decomposed and looks terrible. Being the slack that I am we have started replacing it with gravel around the house which makes maintenance a lot easier.

The first section we did was a nightmare to clean. This time around I got wise and have put up fencing fo the chickens to go and clean.

For the experiment I put 25 chickens in for hours to see if they would make any progress. It’s incredible what a good job they have done. They have dug out pretty much every weed that was there and turned up all the soil.

next time I think I will add 25 chickens and do a slightly smaller area at a time so they really pick it clean.

I can't help feeling that many people do not get the best out of their chickens by keeping them in a coop and run. Many smallholders use chickens for weed and pest control. As you've found out, they can shift an awful lot of dirt in a few hours. A length of temporary fencing will prevent them wandering (mostly) from the patch of ground one wants cleaning up.
How many hours of bent over weeding do you think they've saved you?
