Hi All,

I had 7 chicks hatch out last week and one had a strange deformity/injury with it's eye. I've been keeping watch on it, but it has a little strange, hard lump above the eye socket.

The chick can fully close it's eye and the inner membrane seems to be able to close fully too, so I'm hoping the angle of the eye lid doesn't affect it too much. No infection seems evident.

Any ideas if I can do anything about this or do I just leave it alone and hope it goes away (which I very much doubt). The other eye and all the other chicks are completely normal.

Did the chick hatch this way?

I don't believe I've ever seen this, even in photos. I'm going to tag in @Eggcessive and @coach723 to see if they have any suggestions.

I agree with you at the moment to just monitor. I'm not sure what else you can do.

Yes, it's odd isn't it, I've never seen it either. Not sure if it caught itself on the shell as it was hatching or something and yes, it was born like this. I was really worried until I could see it can close its eye fully, both lids, internal and external. But that little lump is odd too, maybe a type of stye or tumor. Doesn't seem to be growing. It's really odd. Its eating and drinking fine and it can see out of this eye too.

I have never seen this, but it is a deformity I believe. Some people have reported part of the egg shell can stick to the chick before hatch, and it could have been caused by that. I really don’t know. There probably is no issue, since the eyelids are closing normally. Let us know if anything changes.

Little update in case anyone comes across this same issue. Our little chick is doing great! It's always been able to close both the outer lid (albeit not entirely closed at the top where the issue is) and the inner lid has always been able to fully close. No infections seen whilst developing. Here's a picture of it 'hopefully' growing out as it grows.

Thank you for the update.

It would be good if you periodically take photos and add them to this thread so we (and all readers) can see the progress.

I think it looks better now than it did.

Sure thing, if it somewhere down the line helps someone if their chick has the same issue, then that's great 😊

Something I noticed yesterday is that this chick in particular looks to have a v comb coming in. They are from a mixed flock and there was a Houdan cockerel in the mix, so I think we know who Dad is 🤣 This chicks going to look very odd if that is true, doesn't seem to have a crest coming in, so I'm thinking the comb will look really weird on a regular (crestless) bird! Will try and get a picture of it later along with the eye development.
