Week old chicks. It's the end of the world, right?

How is the humidity in the brooder. If it too low that can get them dehydrated and cause pasty butt.

I bet he'd even like the gooey end. I think they are too warm with your wood heat. Therefore, they drink more, therefore their poo is more mushy/sticky. FF will do much to firm up those poos. Last year, I delayed starting FF for my chicks. I had a bunch of them that were hatched from shipped eggs. Their poo was yellow and foamy. Within 24 hours of putting them on FF, their poo was firmed up and normal.
 
If we forget to put water in the steamer/kettle on our wood stove (which is our only heat source,) it gets way too dry in here.
