Hello.
I have a week old duckling that I hatched from and incubator with 11 other eggs (Mom was killed by an opossum - she was my favorite duck and best layer)
The little guy doesn't seem to be growing like the others, and I noticed today it has a wet vent with what looks like it's insides coming out.
Ive had other ducklings do this, and they ended up dying. Does anyone know what this is, or how to prevent it in the future??

Could it be a vent prolapse?
If it is still drinking, and if you have any save-a-chick on hand, maybe try some on this one.
I have heard that hemmerhoid creams can help reduce vent swelling, worth a shot.
Sorry that it happened.

Take a warm wet cloth and clean it's vent. Try keeping it's vent clean as much as possible. Also try putting suagr in their drinking water to give the little one a boost. I like to use Sav-A-Chick Probiotics and Electrolytes in their water for the first week or so to help give them more energy and boost their immune system.
The Electroyles helps:
  • Supports hydration and bird health during periods of hot weather or stress such as shipping or illness
The Probiotics helps:
  • Contains beneficial bacteria to assist with digestive health
  • Convenient single use packets are pre-measured for small volume - each packet mixes into 1 gallon water
But sugar water helps too if you can't get the Ele. and Pro.

What sugar to water ratio do you suggest?
I will go to town first thing in the morning and get what you have suggested, but until then, I'll start with the sugar water. Thanks!

I know what you mean! I made an account over 4 years ago but forgot the password and email, and never made a new one till this year! I'm glad you joined us! It's always nice to have more duck lovers on here!

Here is some pictures of my recent Muscovy ducklings hatch! I sold all of them but love to share how cute they are!

Well, the little one didn't make it.
This has been the typical scenario with the few others over the years, so I wasn't surprised.
It happens the same each time - I notice the affected duckling isn't growing like the others, then the wet vent area, then they parish quickly.
Within an hour of me posting this thread, the duckling had declined significantly (when I posted, I had hope because it was not that "sick"). Whatever this ailment is, at least they don't suffer for a long time.
