WEIRD chicken behavior

She's beautiful

AWWWW Thanks!

Your's has a fluffier up turned tail and she's fluffier all around than Molly is! Molly is a Blue Silkie! Haven't seen any blue, but I've seen a lot of black and silver! LOL Molly is a momma's girl! She purrs to me all the time - like a cat sounds! Does your's purr? Have no idea how old Molly is either. She was given to me from a hatchery not far from here. I needed a hen to go with my roo that was grieving himself to death over the loss of his hen. Molly went in to set mode three days after she got here. And sat for SIX months!

Poor JoJo went back to grieving and died a month later. So we buried him beside his lady, MoMo!

She does purr, and she likes to cuddle

Wendy's a little over 2 now, and she still lays well (when she isn't raising babies). I had another blue hen just like her (Wendy 2, we couldn't tell them apart) that was taken by a hawk a few months back, broke my heart to pieces

So I'm super protective of my remaining Wendy!

Sorry to hear about your roo, but it goes to show how much they hate being alone

Molly loves to be held too. She'll do the slinky thing with her head and neck up underneath my neck. Then she'll duck her head under my arm! I've never had a Silkie I couldn't tell apart. Other than when they were soaking wet! I'd listen to their sounds they made and then I'd know whose who! LOL And I really needed to know which was which!

I had a crazy thing going years ago when I lived in a very small house! It was 115 degrees outside. I couldn't stand seeing my silkies burning up in the heat. So I started stacking cages in my kitchen! Yep! MY KITCHEN! I had 36 cages stacked together! And every one of them had newspaper and fresh hay in them. THAT was a daily JOB I tell ya! Then there were around six more carriers throughout the house with silkies setting or just hatched babies!

The ones in the kitchen would raise hell to be let out! I'd open the door, prop the screen door open and one by one set them on the floor to rush outside. I had a lot of mommas with older babies too that went out together. Then at dark-thirty! I'd do the door thing again and they'd all march into the kitchen. THAT'S why I needed to know who was who. Had to get the babies with the right momma! LOL

And then of course when cold weather rolled around? I still kept them inside. We were all in a habit by then! I also had the occasional hen that wanted to come inside to lay their egg too! You might say I had a revolving door for the chickens use!

And no I'm not crazy! Just love my Silkie's way more than most! I made sure they stayed VERY comfortable!

I hate Hawks with a passion! I've shot several of them! We have them flying over us everyday here too! I keep my .22 Rifle handy. All my pens have nets over the top of them and when they are free ranging I'm there with them. Or my husband!

Might not want to be so open about having committed a crime. SSS means shut up for a reason.

I have spoken with the Game and Fish Commission!
I hate killing anything, but I'm not going to stand by and watch my chickens
repeatedly get carried off by them!

Sorry if I offended anyone!

If you are killing raptors I sure hope you have done more than talk to local state officials about it. There are federal laws protecting raptors, and my understanding is that getting a permit to take depradating raptors is pretty involved and the fines for violating the law are stiff.

I don't take offense at what you are saying, I'm suggesting you be careful about what you say publicly.

You need to do more than speak with Fish and Game about raptors. You need a permit. It is illegal to harm one without a permit and the penalty is a hefty fine.

If you don't want your birds taken by a predator you need to protect them, even if it means confining them. Keep them in their covered runs. That's what I have to do here. If it's not the hawks it's a laundry list of varmints so the chickens stay in a covered run.

Thanks y'all for the advice and concerns!

I have paperwork and the pistol that shoots bangers and screamers from the G&F! It's a hard life having pets that others want to have for supper!

When ppl ask me if the pack of coyotes or other predators can get to my kids? I now just look at them. Then they laugh and say; "Oh Yeah! Your chickens sleep in the house with ya!" You betcha!

I know Owls are also a problem for ppl. But have y'all ever heard a whole group of them calling to one another? And have you ever heard a Barn Owl do it's cackle? I have a really cool sound video of them from about two weeks ago when they were gathered in our backyard doing just that! I'll post it if someone can tell me how to post videos?

We have a very large pair of owls that hunt on our property. They've never been a problem for my chickens, but they give my cat a hard time! The first time I saw them, my husband and I were sitting on our porch watching the cat play with a mouse. The owl came swooping out of nowhere, snatched the mouse from the cat and scared the crud out of him! The said owl just sat in a tree and ate the mouse right in front of the cat, as if to say "ha, ha sucka".

Funny stuff!
