My little banty cochin has a weird crop right now. It's large and feels like a water balloon, and when I feel it it feels like there is something grainy like sand in it, but it's otherwise pretty empty. She's broody right now as well.

Once I took her out of the nest she started pecking around for scratch, but she wasn't interested in pellets. I smelled her mouth and there was no foul smell, and when I held her upside down and massaged it nothing came out.

What's going on and what do I need to do for her? I'm going to check her crop in the early morning to see if it's not emptying in the night.

Is this your first broody? The grainy stuff is probably her food. I would for sure watch her for a bit. When they go broody their bodies go into mama mode. Mine would barely get up in the beginning and then when she needed to go to the bathroom she would get up eat run around and take her one bathroom break for the day ALL at once. Just keep an eye on her. It might just be her body reacting to the changes of broodyness
.

She's kind of a confusing broody. I've had several die-hard broodies in the past but she can't decide if she's completely dedicated or not. I find her in the nest constantly, and puffs up at me, has plucked her chest and is clucking...but she'll quickly abandon the nest for treats or for time outside.

Well I guess she will just make up her mind eventually... That also may be why her crop feels weird is because of her all over the place behavior.

Ok, and at what point do I start to worry? If there's a bad smell? If her crop isn't empty in the morning? If she's listless or not interested in eating at all?
I'll check her in the morning and see how she's doing.

Oh goodness I worry about mine all the time! All those symptoms are definitely somthing to worry about though if she's got them.
