weird eggs, molting or sick???

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have the honor to present what seems to be a miracle.

My lil' lady is back in the game. Her's is the white bottom left.

Here is what happened. The day we went through all of the humane ways of making an end to her sweet life, I was having doubts. 99% of what I have learned through our posts and other threads I started stated that there is something badly wrong with her. There was just this one Lady I met who told me that her Australorp molted for almost 3 months and one day showed the same droopiness one day like Lorelei. That bird also didn't provide healthy eggs, actually lost her entire tail on top of it. She had called me that day and suggested I should give my girl just one more day.

Well, I did and she woke up just dandy! The day after that I found a very nice and smooth, yet veeeery looooong, whiteish egg. What do ya know. I was close to posting the entire event but I wanted to hold off until I could be certain that she is over the hill. Two days no eggs - no soft-shelled or egg-poops either though! And today I find another hard shelled egg, with some strange bumps, I have to admit not to win a contest with. But oh my, I am thrilled. And she is just as happy as can be.

Jumped right out of the cooking pot. If you ask me, she is going through molt, has been trying to keep up with the egg-laying but didn't have enough in her to give it both her best.

We'll see what the next few days bring. I am EGGSTATIC!

WOW! That's most AWESOME news - I never in a gazillion years woulda guessed she'd pull through - I'm THRILLED for you! That egg is very oddly shaped - bet they'll get more even looking as she progresses. I'd keep all her eggs and not crack them for awhile so you can do a picture of the progression - that will be VERY helpful in the future for other peeps who may have this issue! Awesome news - thanks so very much for sharing!

Well, she has been on a roll for this last week. There have been about three soft eggs which were dropped underneath the roost. However there were also three quite good looking eggs (for her standards). She herself is looking good too. She is still the boss in the team and doesn't seem to feel ill at all. At this point I am hoping that she will just pull herself together soon and start producing normally again. We will be adding another hen to the group just to have enough eggs again.


Hey Nicholas, how is New Henstein Castle II coming? Are there any new pictures? Have they moved in yet?

Great to here about Loreli (spelled wrong i think). Does she still have a bare tummy? Any feathers growing in? GET A BARRED ROCK OR AMERAUCANA. 5TH CHICKEN. BARRED ROCK OR AMERAUCANA!! And I'm sure you already know this, but before adding a new hen, you should definetley read this great article that has helped me a TON.

Vitamin deficiency? They need lots of Vitamin D and calcium for proper shell formation. Make sure your feed hasn't gone bad. We had that issue last summer. Store it in a cool dark place. And buy what your hens can consume before it goes bad. If your hen isn't forming egg shells properly, something is wrong. Our vet told us that feed won't necessarily appear bad or rancid, but the longer it sits around, the vitamins which are added to the feed can diminish in their effectiveness.
