Hello,

I have had 6 shipments of chicks this year, from three different sources, and am noticing a weird pattern. If there is one doa, all the remaining chicks survive. If all survive the trip here, there is one dead the next day.

First order(Ideal), one was dead in the box then all survived, and were re-homed at four weeks.

Second order(Ideal) all arrived alive, one dead the next day.

Third order(Ideal, can you tell I like them?) all arrived alive, one dead the next day, all others doing well.

Fourth order(byc'er) one arrived dead, all others doing well.

Fifth order(McMurray) all arrived alive, one dead the next day, all others doing well.

Sixth order(Ideal) all arrived alive, one dead the next day, all others doing well.

It is weird, I almost feel uneasy now when there is not a doa in the box! This is a total of about 270 chicks, it is just weird that this pattern has held out. (We have one more shipment coming in March, I am curious if it will follow the same trend) I guess it is just that the weakest chick in each shipment is going to die. If it is a hard trip, it dies in the box. If it is an easier trip, or maybe less crowded, it dies after arrival.

Anyone else notice any patterns in their shipments?

Carrie(who is so glad all the bedding changes are done, and almost all the chicks are past the pasting up stage!)

I've only ordered chicks online once.

26 arrived, 11 dead within 2 days. (McMurray)... April 2008

Of my 3 hatches

12 all lived
12 all lived
41 all lived.

I'll keep hatching but I may order some chicks from Royce or Jean.... for genetic diversity
and more eggs from Melissa.
