Weird Stuff in Poop??

It’s cecal worm eggs. They’re not moving, only 1/2 inch, and white. Very common in North America and only harmful to turkeys. Deworming them with fenbendazole (SafeGuard) now! 3cc/gal on 10% suspension.

According to Poultry DVM, because of these worms chickens and turkeys should not be raised together, nor should turkeys be raised where chickens have been for at least two years. Good* to know, we have considered raising a turkey or two since we do not hunt.

Nope! I've raised turkeys and chickens together for three years with no issues. I'm fortunate as I don't have blackhead in my soil. If you look at how many pastured poultry folks run their birds, the chickens are three days behind the cattle, the turkeys are one day behind the chickens.

I'm currently participating in a study for UT about Toxoplasma. Apparently 20% of the local wild turkeys have it and they want to see how it moves into domestic turkeys and chickens who share the same pasture. My test is scheduled for Monday and it'll be a few weeks before I get the results. But I'll let you know what they find.

No worries! I find all of this very interesting!! I love science, and I love chickens... well, I love pretty much all birds but that’s another matter... so it’s very interesting to hear!! How do you know you don’t have blackhead in your soil? Additionally, how do you quarantine new birds in order to keep your soil this way?

I know I don't because my turkey's haven't gotten it. No way that I'm aware of to protect the birds if it exists in the soil. From all I've read, it exists in some areas and not in others. The chickens are immune to it, but will pass it along to the turkeys.
