Weird wild duckling

It was strange seeing him with his mom this morning and the what looked like his brother later in the day. He usually keeps to himself. So, I feel good as I think his family is keeping an eye on him. I didn't notice the damage until after I looked at the photo. He seemed fine otherwise. I also wonder if another duck grabbed his bill and that could be why the family is checking up on him. When another duck, Pepper, broke his wing, his brother would chase ducks away from him for a while.

Actually, I don't think that was his mother hanging out with him, though I do think that was his brother. His mother is currently raising two new babies not that far away. I am not sure if I saw him yesterday. I did see a duck that looked very similar to him hanging way out in the middle of the lake, but I can't be sure. He was small with that funny bill shape which is even more noticeable now. But, his feathers were not scraggly like the one in the photo. He does tend to go back and forth between two bays in the lake.

I saw him today and I think his bill is getting better, though I couldn't tell for sure because he wouldn't look straight at me. He seemed very wary. His companion/brother didn't help with that much because Trouble seems to be watching him for signs of danger. That other duck was a bit afraid of me and moved away, so Trouble did as well.

Thanks! I've just noticed that his bill and head shape are so unique that I don't think there's any other drake on the lake that looks like him. His companion's bill is much shorter and rounder. I've seen females with this shape bill, but not the males so much. His mother's bill is extremely long, too.

This *may* be Trouble's younger sister. She was one of four ducklings. Another sibling of hers made it to almost three weeks, then disappeared. This one is called Uno II or Una. I think she's about six weeks old in this photo. I didn't see her the last time I was at the lake.

Notice the bill, it's very similar to Trouble's. I think that comes from their mother.

I think I saw him today and I think his bill might be healed. It's hard to tell now because we have several other small young mallards. But this one had Trouble's characteristic scruffiness and friendliness. Miss Una, the one whom I think is his younger sister, was also with him as was his mother.

I'm not sure if he has fathered any ducklings this year as he's quite the loner. If he's fathered any, I wouldn't know because he doesn't hang around any particular female.
