Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

I've inadvertently made myself a very frustrating problem.
Over the past couple of years I've helped a few local people out with sick chickens or advice on such things as making secure coops.
I had a hen here a couple of nights ago with what seemed to be an impacted crop. I know the man that keeps her and the general state of health of his flock. She was in fact suffering from coccidiosis which had led to mild crop impaction.
More recently I've been asked in the village if I'll have a look at sick hens from flocks I know nothing about.
It's a small village and although I'm not in the village often, it seems everyone knows about my chicken exploits. I got asked this evening to look at a hen that didn't look at all well by someone I had never met before. They drove up the track with their hen to see me.
Now I would love to help but I don't want other peoples chickens up here with undiagnosed problems in case it's something infectious.
Fortunately the guy didn't take the chicken out of his car. But, I had to tell him I couldn't even look at the hen here because of the risk of contamination.
I need to find a way of putting the brakes on this. I keep a closed flock and this is one of the reasons they are so healthy. They also come in my house so I can't really have non members in here.
thats a difficult situation. Unfortunately most people in a small town or village know where people live even if they have never spoken to them. Even here where The population density in the desert is one per every ten acres.... even less in some areas.

Possible solutions:
1. Can you arrange to speak to people before they Arrive at your door...? then meet them at a public place that is not your land?

2. Can you place a sign on your road to call you ?

3. Can you make it a rule to keep chickens in Transport containers after arriving.

Biosecurity can be breached by any one of those people who simply step out of their car.... So Ideally its best arrange a meet at their house. That would help you take a look at their husbandry practices.

Good luck

ours came down mostly during the night. Buried the steps off the porch to the critter yard. The other side of the roof let go this morning and buried the front porch.

You should make both.;)
FMF isn't a breeder as such and definitely isn't a hatchery. I would say the chances of getting good quality fowl are far better than either of the above options and then you won't be tempted the next time you see some poor chicks scrabbling about in a box at a local farm store.
I f I was within traveling distance I would be there now.
I know, that’s true. I just am swamped at the moment. :lau

Look who thinks he’s the princess & the pea.
