Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

nope. just decided to do the census again for the extra money for "stuff", pay off a small hospital bill and for the challenge. Get the mental cobwebs blown out etc. We don't have a bunch but we don't want for anything important so all's good. The DH is happy I let it go and can now help with getting the last preps done for winter but I still made enough already to pay off the hospital and finally get that upright freezer I wanted and move that chest freezer to the garage. (Never Knew what all was crammed in there and every time I wound up standing on my head to dig something out of the bottom of that freezer I felt like I was dumpster diving!)I still have one more paycheck coming which will probably go for a new refrigerator.
What about intellectual stimulation away from the home and the mundane? It's one of the things I miss a bit being here. Much as I love the animals they are not the greatest conversationalists, especially when one can't understand most of what they say.:D

Thats what I miss mostly... My son is a great conversational person. But his views of the world are far different than mine.

I need more.... I need to be able to run off the rails sometimes without being scoffed at.... Teased maybe but

Thats why I like The Discussion groups like the sin bin. Its a good substitute... But I would like to go to a movie now and then or a play.... IN town at home there are quite a number of artistes and musicians.

There is even a music festival a week after Burning man.... Local musicians and Bands from San Diego.... Camping in a desert wash.... A few thousand show up for that one. I cant handle tromping around int the sand.... but a bunch usually show up at the local pub Shoot pool and shoot the Shit.... I am in the corner usually nursing a beer and talking to anyone who wants.

I miss it... I miss the desert rats that come in for some TV shoot some pool and generally share thier displeasure with society... Drink their fill and stagger out to their Desert beater cars and drive home on wild dirt roads.

I understand less & less of what people say as the years pass. That's alright though; most of what they say makes no sense, anyway. And animals don't argue with me.

Same problem here Shad. I would never ever live in the city again as long as I'm able to make my own decisions, but sometimes I do miss the interaction with "intelligent" human beings and being able to challenge and be challenged intellectually. Just to sit in on a good lecture or enjoy a great performance would be heaven for me. Or to sit in a coffee house and converse with someone with similar interests, sigh. I love living as far out as we do and in general love the company of my critters (both domestic and wild) far more than my own species but sometimes, for a moment or two, I do miss the interaction (and the fun I had) at Mensa meetings, etc. It's been years since.............. Sorry, back to counting my blessings. Time to go let the birds out.
eta-I dearly love my intelligent DH but we are complete polar opposites and have zero interests in common, tho we have "blended" a bit over the years. Maybe that's why we compliment each other so well but it also makes for very shallow conversations. We can't even get into a good political conversation because that is the one area in which we both agree.

I think it's a problem for a lot of people who have abandoned the rat race and decided that the there are other priorities other than making money in their lives. Here, where I live there is a lot of accessible culture and some of it is of a very high standard. Like perchie.girl has mentioned above the desire for some friendly human company from time to time is hard to ignore.
I did go out to a concert in Barcelona last year. It was quite a posh event and required a certain standard of dress. I felt very odd ironing a shirt and trousers, polishing shoes I hardly ever wear and wondering who that well turned out man was I could see in the reflections of shop windows as I walked through the city.:)
I could still live in a city and if this Brexit business and other family stuff goes South I may find myself doing exactly that.

Half way to Anchorage the cops saw him (not sure how they knew it was the guy... except he was spotted close to the fire...so maybe they still have a pilot car there... and stopped cars on the road????)

... close to Cooper Landing.
I saw a fire update on Friday. They were piloting cars through it for about 20 miles, I think. The article said to be sure to have plenty of food, water and fuel as delays could be anywhere from 40 minutes to several hours. I believe Cooper Landing is at “set” stage for evaluation prep, and Sterling is at “ready”.

Actually... the shocks are great... and new... but the back driver's side one has popped through some rust... so isn't doing much... and the leaf springs are about flat.....
I was suddenly transported back to our drive up the mountain on that dirt road... I’ll bet that car chase was quite the ride!

I was the first residence in my region to acquire internet service way back when and it was a sanity saver during our long winters, and as slow and broken it tends to be, still is. This entire area is so lacking in anything that would pass for culture (save some of the amazing artists hiding up here in the northwoods) that the only remaining new seller bookstore within more than 100 miles closed it's doors years ago. I guess that's what I miss most actually about "civilization". I could, and often did, get lost for hours in a good book store but especially one that sold old books. I even loved the smell of those musty volumes. On the rare opportunity to attend a flea market (I believe you might refer to them as boot sales) I immediately get drawn to anyone with a pile or box of old books. Any current information I seek can be easily accessed with the click of a keyboard but the wisdom and knowledge of the past just isn't the same to me if it's not delivered by my hands on a beautiful old volume. Rambling again, sorry.

Not rambling at all and what's more I agree with you.
I found it really difficult when I came here to limit myself to a specified cubic meterage of stuff. I had to dump a lot of books I had collected over the years. I did save some which are sitting in one of my daughters attics. I brought a few with me.
You may have seen some picture of the inside of my house on BYC. Everything in it I brought with me in the way of furniture. A lot of the items I picked up in 'junk shops' when I was in my early twenties. A bit of TLC and I had good quality wooden furniture. The chair I'm sitting in as I type this I bought in a junk shop in 1976. It was covered in light green paint.
