Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

My breed lust list:

Leghorn. Isabella color, dark browns, anything spotted.

Buttercup

Hamburg

Dominique

Ameraucana, wheaten

Nankin

D'anvers

Spitz

Wyandottes, especially BLR, and Jubilie, and some of the creamy ones...blanking on color names

Marans, black copper or wheaten

Welsummer
I've had RSL, BCM, Buff Orpington, crosses of all of them, and love them all. Grandma always had the white Leghorns, but I haven't tried them yet. How do theY stack up against the Orpingtons, which lay a small egg compared to the RSL & BCM?

I think the production white Leghorn lay like the RSL, but I haven't ever had RSL.

My production white lay every single day for 1.5 years, then they started a molt and maybe a third died or had issues... egg prolapse, vent gleet, etc. Also as chicks, production whites are way more susceptible to cannibalism. Have to watch space issues etc. closely. Mine were fine when grown.

My heritage white lay almost as well, and their eggs are almost as big... but they lay for way more years, and I haven't had a vent prolapse in a single one (at this point I have had over a 100). Also, no more cannibalism than an average chicken. They start out flighty, but mellow. A few of mine have been excellent broodies.

The BCM I found to be slower girls, they ate like horses and were stingy with their eggs. I enjoyed the dark brown egg color, but just couldn't justify that much extra feed for a dark egg.

I haven't ever had Orpingtons.

This girl is a cross, heritage white leghorn to heritage dark brown. That is why she has the cream wash on her breast.

Such a good broody! (Pic from a year back) She is a rose comb.

The chicks are pure Leghorn. The brown ones will be dark brown, the yellows will be white x dark brown.

Oh! A breed lust list!!!

Everyone chime in!

Hmm. Well, of course I love the breeds I have - ko shamo, liege fighter, brahma.

Ones that I'd love to have, if I had all kinds of space and money:

Malays, true purebreds

Flarry Eyed Grays

Sultans

True Naked Necks

Tomarus (guess what I have in my incubator right now :D)

BBS Wheaten Ameraucanas

Modern Game bantams

That's just chickens of course, haha.

Gotta say my Orpington rooster is easier to get along with than any of the others I've had, although he didn't start out that way. Still a rooster, though, & still commands respect.

It took me abit to breed only good Leghorn males, that is true. From my first set of 10, I think only 4 had zero people aggression
