Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Found one of my young (12 weeks) self-blue OEGB's on the ground this morning, almost lifeless. Had to finish her off. I've got to figure out what the #^&#%* is going on! :barnie :hit
Oh, no!!! :he :he I'm so sorry!!! No idea what's going on... but would deworm just in case, plus it would destress them and might help anyways???
i have 2 new babies this morning
Well... that's totally unexpected... but yep, one of my regular escapees, lol... never hatched any of her eggs before either... Mom is a Silkie cross, half Silkie/half Cream Legbar... babies daddy could either be Silkie or Lav Orp... :gig

The bad news is I don't think it was the same one as the one that was sluggish weekend before last (9 days ago) I think this was the other girl. Didn't have time to determine this morning, will check closer this evening. They look so much alike, it's hard to differentiate them.

Now I'm picturing a lav orp on a silkie!! :lau

Well, if I had known that I could have sent you some for sure pure Silkie eggs... heck, I'm getting 3 or 4 eggs a day now! All the deworming and debugging treatments broke all but 1 Silkie broody finally! :gig

If either is blue, then it's 3/4 Silkie for sure... one Silkie roo is Splash, other is black and she is black... she lives with them, but won't keep her @$$ in that pen... oh, I can't remember when I moved him, but another daddy possibility is a BCM... Leia is a bit crazy... protests the Silkie boys breeding her, but likes to hang out with the BIG boys... :lau

I really don't know what's going on there... I've not had issues like that, just the worms and heat stress this summer... I'm wondering if the orps were carrying something??? :idunno

Yeah, big Lav Orp... big BCM... :gig

lol, once you go BCM you never go back?

I guess so! She always used to go into the BCM pen during the day, laid her eggs in their coop religiously... that pen is now my mixed pen with my Lav Orp... but no idea if they bred her or not...

The Silkie boys tag her every time she goes back in for the night, so...

If Silkie is daddy, them higher chance of the babies having Silkie feathering... so if they don't have smooth feathers, then they're 3/4 Silkie... little hussy... :gig

Shade will be ecstatic, she's his and one of his faves, lol...

I know... I'm sorry... :hugs

Orpie is bigger than the BCM, lol... but she started with the BCM... now she hangs with Orpie... can't blame her, he's a mellow sweetheart... ;)

Does anyone have experience in shipping day old chicks? I had someone ask me the other day. It makes me a bit nervous.

I've had many hundreds of chicks and poults shipped here over the years.

They will be held at the post office. Be sure to give your phone number to the shipper so the PO can call you, usually even before they open. Turn on the brooder heat before you leave.

After the ride home, I like to let them rest in the house in the shipping box for 30 minutes or so to calm down. I make final preparations for the brooder, check the temperature, fill the water. Dip their beaks just a little as you remove them from the box. Once they are all out, tap your finger in the food and then leave them alone to settle in. Check back in a bit to be sure all is well and they will do fine.

Risks:
Lost in shipping: rare but it happens
Delayed shipping: more common, but usually ok if a day late
Rough handling: rarely happens
Chilled/overheated/wet in transit: often high losses

Seller will typically credit for all shipping losses or reship.

If there are two hatcheries offering comparable chicks, choose the closer one.
