We used wire leaders to fish Pike too....I don't.
But most do....I find I miss a few fish because of it.... But I get more chances.... The wire leaders I think... Discourage fish from hitting.

I've used 'em the rare times I've fished with lures, so I don't what effect it has. Since you do, I'll go with your theory

Not so much a theory..... Just I think when you have a wire leaders on you get less hits..... And although occasionally I do lose a lure it's rare..... Usually with a Pike the lure isn't swallowed so the teeth aren't cutting the line.
But it does happen lost a monster Pike last year that way...... But I get more chances....I think anyways.

If I'm fishing with bait..... Live or dead.....I use a steel leader.....I make my own.
Usually a black leader about 3 feet long..... Because when you Pike fish with bait the incentive is to get the first to swallow the bait.
I don't fish this way much because you will kill the Pike and I don't fish Pike for food.... Just fun.
